2.02.2010 - Help for Haiti: Colchester Rotary Club and Shelterboxes
Colchester Rotary Club President Len Nieuwenhuis is seen receiving cheques from 3 local businesses of £500 each: Ellisons Solicitors, James and Lindsay Insurance Brokers and DCH Construction, as well as over £1,000 collected at the Rugby Club on Saturday 23 January, over £600 collected at the Mayor of Colchester's recent charity events, an anonymous donation of £500, and £450 raised from Rotary Club members personal donations.
Rotary ShelterBoxes are being rushed out to Haiti, to provide shelter for thousands affected by the recent earthquake. The ShelterBox project was started by Rotarian Tom Henderson of the Rotary Club of Helston-Lizard, Cornwall, and now operates in 8 countries. 2,000 boxes have already gone out, and a further 1800 were sent out on Friday 29 January.
Each ShelterBox contains a durable 10-person tent, sleeping bags or bedlinen for 10, feeding and cooking equipment - including a multi-fuel cooker, useful tools, some childrens' toys - and water purification equipment.
Each box costs £500. The Colchester Club has already forwarded £2,000 from Club funds, together with £700 from the Interact Club at the Colchester County High School for Girls. The fresh funds bring the Rotary Club of Colchester's contribution to the rotary ShelterBox appeal for Haiti to £6,000. This latest funding will provide a further seven ShelterBoxes.
Colchester Rotary President Len Nieuwenhuis said, "As Rotary President, and a former President of the Rugby Club, I am delighted that these donations have come together to enable us to support this splendid initiative. We are not all able to go out and help, but we are able to provide some comfort to those so badly affected"

1.10.2009 - Marshall Legal and Ellisons merger
On the 1st October 2009, Ellisons merged with Marshall Legal in Colchester, reinforcing the position of Ellisons as one of the most prominent providers of legal services in the region. The merger decision came just a year after the firm attracted PTL Solicitors to unite their respective practices. The combined firm, which is known as Ellisons, has 23 partners and approximately 25 other lawyers. It now offers greater strength across all practice areas but in particular: Property, Civil Litigation, Private Client and Family
Ellisons' Senior Partner, Peter Powell, is delighted that Marshall Legal, which has a history almost as long as that of Ellisons, has joined forces: "Marshall Legal has roots in Colchester going back to 1829 and Ellisons has evidence of beginning at least sixty years earlier. Such a solid historic foundation is important but much more pertinent is the fact that we believe we have a strong future together.
Marshall's former Senior Partner Charles Penfold is equally positive. "Choosing the right partners is always important but must be more so when we were making such a significant move. This merger reflects our mutual confidence that the Marshall practice fits well with Ellisons' plans for the future and the new combined firm will provide a strong platform from which to further develop our business and service the needs of our clients"
This merger reflects the commitment of both firms to growth, achieved through a combination of organic development and strategic mergers. The vision of the newly merged firm reflects the desire of each merger partner to focus on commercial work, particularly through the Colchester office but still maintain a strong private client base. The combined firm will offer greater strength across all practice areas but in particular: Property, Civil Litigation, Private Client and Family.

11.09.2009 - Ellisons' Mergers Highlighted as Essex Firm Maintains Strong Profile
This year's Legal 500 research highlights the success of Ellisons merger with PTL Solicitors and the firm's acquisition of Suffolk-base law firm Wanham Longhurst. The Essex firm, which has offices in Colchester, Clacton, Dovercourt and Frinton, continues with its growth strategy as it merges with Colchester-based Marshalls Legal next month.
Ellisons is perceived as a constant player in the Legal 500 research, consistently being ranked in the key practice areas of Commercial Property; Corporate and Commercial; Commercial Litigation; Employment; Private Client and Family. In all these categories the researchers compare Ellisons favourably with other firms in Essex. In addition Ellisons performs well in the more focused disciplines of Property Litigation, Planning and Insurance/Personal Injury even though the research tables for these practice areas are not sub-divided by county but instead cover the densely populated South East of England.
The research which is based on client and contact interviews published the following client quotes in highlighting individuals and practices this year:
- Graeme Wallington is "noted for his civil litigation expertise, particularly in relation to employment and property-related disputes."
- Jayne Scott 'is highly committed and has proved invaluable in resolving employment issues'.
- Property Litigation Head and newly made partner Lee Pearce is praised for being 'tenacious and practical'.
- Commercial Property partner Andrew Tilsley, (who joined as a result of the PTL merger), is acknowledged for strengthening the team.
- Corporate and Commercial: 'A friendly firm with experts in key aspects of law'
- Family, which is ranked in the top tier again this year, received praise for its 'wide breadth of knowledge'. particularly in relation to advice given to farming clients and family owned businesses.

Senior Partner Peter Powell, is delighted with these recent developments: "Both Robert and Lee have been star performers and key contributors to the firm's strong reputation in their respective areas of property and insurance. I am delighted that the alternative business structures and in particular, the Multidisciplinary Practices (MDP), now sanctioned by the Legal Services Act, allows lawyers trained via the Legal Executive route to become partners. It is a status that both have enjoyed and deserved in all but name but we are pleased to now be able to officially call them "partners"."

21.07.2009 - West Mersea Yacht Club's Round Island Race 2009 - Sponsor Ellisons Solicitors goes round again
Ellisons Solicitors is sponsoring West Mersea Yacht Club's annual 'Round the Island' Race, for the third year running.
Well over a hundred dinghies and small boats of all shapes and sizes are expected to circumnavigate the Island in this West Mersea Yacht Club organised race, which takes place this year on Wednesday the 19th August, mid-way through Mersea Week.
Entries close on Wednesday12th August, after which time competitors will be watching the weather in order to plan their strategies which importantly includes the option to choose which way around the island to sail. Crews decide at the last moment whether to go clockwise or anti-clockwise around the Island, crossing the Strood with the help of the friends and family.
Ellisons partner Seamus Clifford is not racing this year, having being "persuaded" into acting as one of the race officials, but others competing from the North Essex firm include Tim Logan, Louise Bland and Ceri Rogers.
Seamus explains why Ellisons are more than happy to continue with their support of this annual event: "Many of our Firm, including myself, live on the island, as do a number of our clients. The island community is important to us and how better to demonstrate our commitment than to continue with the sponsorship of this unique event. It is a wonderful family occasion and an opportunity to celebrate how very privileged we are to live and work in this very beautiful coastal location."
More than 100 helpers are needed to make the Race possible, both on the water providing safety and support cover, and ashore running the racing and assisting at the Strood to help get the boats get across the roadway. The organisers appreciate the patience of residents and visitors on this one day when you cannot escape acknowledging that Mersea is indeed an island.

1.07.2009 - Ellisons launches Rural Affairs Team as it steps up its support for Tendring Hundred Show
North Essex law firm, Ellisons, has been a long-term supporter of the annual Tendring Hundred Show but this year, with the launch of its specialist team focussing on rural issues, it has increased its support to sponsor the Art Show.
Tim Logan, Head of Private Client and leading the Rural Affairs Team explains why: "Clients in the rural community have always been important to us and so this is not so much about a new service but an opportunity to improve our focus. The merger with PTL in May 2008 made us the law firm with the greatest spread of offices on the Tendring peninsula and the imminent merger with Marshall Legal will continue to increase our service in the Private Client sector. Looking more strategically at what more we can offer our rural based clients is a logical step and where better to confirm our commitment to this community than by having a greater presence at this year's premier agricultural event in Essex." The core Rural Affairs team is made up of lawyers from Private client, Corporate, Litigation, Property and Planning. Other members of the Firm will also be involved (Photo L to R: Lee Pearce, Ceri Rogers, Louise Bland, Tim Logan, Tom McPhie) Sponsorship includes hosting a preview party on the evening of Friday 10th July and having a presence in the art marquee throughout the show, which takes place at Lawford House Park, Nr Manningtree, Essex. Visitors to Ellisons' stand will be invited to take part in a prize draw to win a hamper of regional produce. Ellisons has continued with its countryside theme in the announcement of its choice of annual charity to support. For 2009/10, members of the firm will be encouraged to focus fundraising efforts on the Essex Wildlife Trust, the county's leading conservation charity.

6.5.2009 - COLCHESTER PROPERTY CONFERENCE - BANK OF ENGLAND REALISTIC PERSPECTIVE APPRECIATED
On Thursday 30 April, over 160 delegates with a professional interest in the property sector attended a breakfast seminar at the Weston Homes Community Stadium. Jointly organised by a trio of local advisers - Ellisons Solicitors, Fenn Wright Estate Agents and PKF Accountants & Business Advisers - the guest speaker was Phil Eckersley, Agent for the Bank of England in the Bank's South East & East Anglia region.
Phil Eckersley acknowledged that many in the room would be hoping for some "shreds of comfort" in his presentation but tempered any excessive optimism by balancing the fact that while there had been some credit easing, the overall view of City commentators on the economic outlook was still fairly gloomy. Acknowledging some positive signs such as the modest improvement in the housing market, the bottoming out of the mortgage products sector and the opportunities for other lenders to plug the gap now that 30% of the secured lending market had withdrawn, Mr Eckersley warned that synchronised downturn in GDP was still happening. With some commentators now predicting a pick up by 2010, he cautioned that whilst things were negative, there had been a substantial monetary policy response by the Bank of England through interest rate cuts and Quantitative Easing and there were now some signs that the economy was no longer deteriorating.
Guy Longhurst, Property Partner at Ellisons chaired the event. Andrew Crayston, Fenn Wright's Senior Partner examined the effects on the downturn in Property and Peter Harrup, Tax Partner at PKF concluded the seminar by looking at property related tax issues.
The organisers were happy that the event had achieved their objectives: Andrew Crayston explains, "As a sector we have suffered from increasingly widespread misinformation that spreads like wildfire across the internet. So what we wanted to achieve from inviting Phil Eckersley to speak to us was - 'don't believe the stats, hear it from the frontline! - and I think that is indeed what we achieved today' Guy Longhurst was equally positive with the day. "What people outside the sector sometimes forget is that the media has been crying "credit crunch" for just over a year but Property has been in recession for at least twelve months longer. We go in first but hopefully emerge first. That position has a degree of responsibility attached, particularly when advising clients. Part of that responsibility must be to keep them well informed." Peter Harrup who had spearheaded the initiative was delighted was delighted with the response to the event. "The property sector is key to the local economy and we can see from the record turnout for this event that it is a subject of huge concern to the business community."
Delegates were asked to complete a feedback form which included a mini survey on issues touched on in the seminar. From a sample of 55 delegates:
- 48% felt "more positive about the property sector now than in six months ago"
- 31% "expect the property market to return to growth within the next 12 months"; 34.5% were undecided and another 34.5% thought "no"
- 53% thought the Government should be doing more to stimulate the property sector

22.12.2008 - Ellisons Solicitors explore the "for better and worse" of the Christmas season
With January traditionally being a peak month for matrimonial law enquiries and the Guy Ritchie and Madonna split shining a few festive spotlights on divorce, in the week before Christmas, Family lawyers from Ellisons conducted a seasonal mini-survey to see what the people of Colchester think about the current state of marriage and their views on some of the recent high media profile divorces.
The mini survey which had 81 respondents focused on four main issues;
- The impact of Christmas on relationships;
- Is there a touch of sexism in divorce?
- Effects on divorce from the economic downturn;
- The truth about cohabitation rights.
When asked whether Christmas can be a stressful time for relationships, the people of Colchester are in an optimistic mood with 65% seeing the season as positive; 15% perceived it had no effect on relationships and only 20% viewed it as an additionally stressful time.
People were also asked their views on the Guy Ritchie and Madonna divorce and whether they felt Guy Ritchie should seek a share of Madonna's wealth. The bulk of the questionnaires were completed at a time when it was reported that Guy Ritchie was to walk away with nothing. An astounding 85% thought that Guy Ritchie receiving nothing would be fair although there was a higher percentage of agreeing female respondents (91%) than male (77%). If the division of wealth was reversed, however, only 36% felt that Madonna would have had a justifiable claim on Ritchie's assets. Comments supporting the question suggest that in divorces with significant money on both sides, the division should reflect their independent wealth with a very strong sentiment, and that no matter how wealthy where children are involved, the party responsible for their care should be treated most favourably.
When asked whether people are more or less likely to divorce in the current economic climate, the results were fairly neutral with 33% believing it would make no difference. Less positive, however, was the contrast of 47% believing that the divorce rate is likely to increase and only 20% predicting it will reduce.
The final question looked at cohabitation rights. A worrying 37% of respondents believed that if you lived with someone long enough, you had the same rights as if you were married and a further 17% didn't know. From the Respondents who were cohabiting 47% thought they did have the same rights and a further 13% didn't know. Only 40% of cohabitants knew that there was no such thing as a 'common law spouse'. It was a worrying trend that those already cohabiting thought that they automatically had rights. They were certainly not aware of the option that cohabiting couples had the option to legally ensure that through cohabitation agreements, specially drafted wills and if house owners, a clear and documented agreement about how large a share they have in their home, they could protect their assets if they later unfortunately separated or if one of them died.
Lisa Anderson, one of the Family law specialists at Ellisons, who conducted the survey commented: "We appreciate that this is only a snapshot of the general public's opinions and with more time and a greater sample, the research would be more robust but it has thrown up some quite interesting trends. We were delighted that on the whole the people of Colchester were positive about Christmas and yet understandably had concerns about the impact of the economic downturn on relationships. There is, as we expected, a subtle confirmation that men and women continue to think differently in terms of what is just in terms of divorce settlements but the most concerning theme must be without doubt, the results of the cohabitation question. There are quite simply too many people, particularly women, who naively continue to cohabit without legal advice in the belief that they have the same rights as a married spouse."
In recognition and thanks for the time respondents gave to completing the questionnaire, a donation is being made to Headway, Essex. This is the charity selected by Ellisons as its charity of the year 2008/9 to benefit from various fundraising initiatives. {There is a copy of the questionnaire here]

21.10.2008 - Local Businesses help Mersea Islanders plough their furrows
On Saturday 18th October, Mersea Islanders gathered at Dawes Lane to witness the age old tradition of the ploughing match.
The match started at 10.00am and spectators were able to enjoy a selection of food and drink from John Gray Meats, Mersea Brewery and the Company Shed. There was also a Farmer's Market selling local produce and Classic Tractors were on display alongside a number of trade stands.
At 3.00pm there was a prize giving for the following classes: see attached results
As well as class sponsors, a number of local businesses donated monies. Ellisons Solicitors was more than happy to be one of the key supporters of the event with a donation of £500, as Partner Andrew Tilsley explains: "Many of our Firm, including myself, live on the island, as do a number of our clients and so it seems natural for a local business such as Ellisons to support this focal event. Farming is an important sector for our business and it is a privilege for Ellisons to have the opportunity to play its part in keeping alive the traditions of our rural communities."
Organisers, David Leggett and Sarah Baldwin were delighted with the day. David said: "There is no denying that it is a lot of hard work to organise this event. However, with the help of local businesses, huge community support and of course very talented ploughmen and women, we are committed to keeping these traditions alive on the island of Mersea."
The event, which was resurrected in 2006 after a gap of 55 years, will hopefully be held again in two years time. The competition has the support of the NFU and raised funds for the Royal Agricultural Benevolent Institution.
As a result of the event, a donation of £2,500 was made to RABI and £60 to the local scouts for organising the car park.

8.10.2008 - Ellisons Solicitors celebrates merger and helps light up Clacton for Christmas
Ellisons Solicitors is a new name on Clacton's Station Road. The leading Essex law firm, with offices also in Colchester, Frinton and Dovercourt was delighted to finally add Clacton to its network of offices on the Tendring peninsula with the merger of PTL Solicitors last May.
Last night, at a reception at the Kingscliff Hotel, some 100 guests - clients and contacts of the Firm from Clacton and the surrounding region - celebrated the merger in style.
Host Nicky Coates, who is the partner responsible for managing both the Frinton and Clacton offices, was happy to welcome everyone to the party. Nicky explained "The merger was significant for Ellisons and we now have a significant presence on the Tendring peninsula." I have been based in Frinton now for over four years, and it is clear to me and my partners that for towns such as Clacton and Frinton, it is not just a matter of providing the services required but also to be able to provide those services in the context of being part of the community and appreciating local issues."
With this mind, Ellisons , post merger, Ellisons joined the Clacton Chamber of Trade and Tourism. Employment Partner Jayne Scott, who is the Firm's key representative for the Chamber commented: "We were delighted that an opportunity for us to demonstrate our commitment to the area has materialised in the form of the Clacton Christmas Lights Appeal which is being spearheaded by the Clacton Gazette, the Chamber's Clacton Community Projects working party and fellow Chamber member Dream 100. It seems appropriate timing as we celebrate our presence in Clacton with this party, to present our donation to this very worthy cause tonight."
Nicky Coates was happy to present a cheque for £500 to Ron Stephenson, husband of the Chamber's President, Teresa Stephenson, who thanked the Firm for making such a significant contribution to its £10,000 target.

30.09.2008 - Ellisons Solicitors steps into Suffolk with Wanham Longhurst Acquisition
Ellisons Solicitors, with offices in Colchester, Clacton on Sea, Dovercourt and Frinton on Sea, has crossed the county border into Suffolk for the first time with the acquisition of sole practitioner Tony Longhurst's practice in Bury St Edmunds.
Wanham Longhurst & Co, which offers primarily residential conveyancing services with some commercial property and wills and probate, will cease operating on 30th September 2008 when the Firm will be formally incorporated with Ellisons. Tony Longhurst retires after thirty seven years of practice as a Solicitor, twenty five of them based in Bury St Edmunds; the previous twelve as a partner in a firm in Cambridgeshire.
Tony Longhurst's decision to retire and entrust his clients to Essex-based Ellisons may cause some surprise because of the perceived geographic focus of his choice of successor but in fact Ellisons was the natural choice. Guy Longhurst, Tony's son, who lives in Suffolk and is a past pupil of Culford School, is a Commercial Property specialist and one of the Managing Partners of Ellisons Solicitors.
"Ellisons is by far the best firm of solicitors to look after my clients on my retirement." explains Tony. "It means a great deal to me that it will be my son's firm caring for my clients and advising them on their future legal affairs. Keeping it "in the family", so to speak, has been warmly received by most of my clients who value the continuity of the personal connection. In addition, there are the obvious benefits in that Ellisons can not only provide my clients with all the same services but very much more."
Guy Longhurst also recognises the personal appeal and the business logic of acquiring his father's firm and was delighted that the proposal won the full support of the partnership:
"Taking over my fathers practice makes good commercial sense. Although Essex - based, Ellisons acts for clients across East Anglia. The idea of having a base in Suffolk has been mooted frequently and the opportunity to acquire Wanham Longhurst & Co was just too good to miss. The business and client profile perfectly matches those of our offices on the Tendring peninsula which are essentially strong private client practices but with some commercial clients who will benefit from the wider resources in Colchester." Guy explains: "I always knew that my father would find it difficult to retire completely and so by incorporating his practice into Ellisons but staying on as a Consultant, it is a "win win" situation for both sides. "
Tony Longhurst has been considering retirement for some time with a view to spending a little more time at his holiday home in Norfolk with his wife Nora and pursuing their other interests.
Ellisons is not currently considering establishing an office in Bury St Edmunds but will primarily service clients from its other five offices and by making local arrangements to have meetings and relationship management.

5.09.2008 - WEST MERSEA VILLAGE GREEN APPLICATION VICTORY
The seven-year battle by West Mersea Town Council against the refusal by Essex County Council to grant permission to designate the Youth Field (to the rear of School Gardens) a "village green", concluded in victory yesterday for the people of Mersea when the Inspector published his report, following the Public Enquiry, recommending that the land is registered as a village green
The application was made after Essex County Council, which owns the land, had stated that the field was "surplus to requirements" and that in an effort to "maximise their assets" they could not promise not to sell it off for development.
West Mersea Town Council sought legal advice to prove that the land has been used as common land by the people of Mersea "as of right" for many years and as the last remaining green spaces in the middle of the town, it needed to be protected.
West Mersea Town Council, which has maintained the field for many years, wishes to turn the whole area into a proper public park for future generations to enjoy. Yesterday, the Inspector's published report, recommending that the land is registered as a village green, effectively safeguarded this objective and ensures that the field continues to be enjoyed by the residents of West Mersea. Edward Powell of Ellisons, solicitors for West Mersea Town Council said "This is a stunning victory for the people of West Mersea. They have been using this field for generations and they have stood up to Essex County Council to ensure that they can continue to use it for generations to come" Dave Tucker, Town Clerk at West Mersea Town Council, said "I am delighted with the result. The councillors have had to make some tough decisions along the way and they have showed great dedication to preserving this open space for everyone to enjoy." The controversial signs erected by Essex County Council in 2001 in an attempt to prevent the land becoming a village green were declared by the Inspector as being inaccurate and illogical. They were ECC's "last throw of the dice" but were "ineffective" Essex County Council (which still own the land) must now implement the Inspectors findings and register the land as a village green. This formal process is likely to take a further few months.
A copy of the Inspector's Report is available on request. Contact Teresa Harman on 07770 425068.

2.08.2008 - West Mersea Yacht Club's Round Island Race 2008 - Sponsor Ellisons Solicitors goes round again.
Ellisons Solicitors has proved that it is not just "fair weather friend" to the West Mersea Yacht Club. In spite of last year's inclement conditions resulting in a last-minute cancellation of the event, the local law firm is once again the proud sponsor for the annual 'Round the Island' race,
Well over a hundred dinghies and small boats of all shapes and sizes are expected to circumnavigate the Island in this West Mersea Yacht Club organised race, which takes place this year on Wednesday the 20th August, mid-way through Mersea Week.
Entries close on Wednesday 13 August 2008, after which time competitors will be watching the weather in order to plan their strategies which importantly includes the option to choose which way round to sail. Crews decide at the last moment whether to go clockwise or anti-clockwise around the Island, crossing the Strood with the help of the friends, family and soldiers from MCTC in Colchester,
The big challenge for the serious contenders will be to beat the record set in 2002 by John Ready and his crew Courteney Woodward who circumnavigated the island in 56 minutes and 3 seconds in their Hurricane 5.9 catamaran. For the rest, the serious amateur, it promises to be a great day of family fun with a post-race barbeque and music adding to the carnival atmosphere.
Various people from Ellisons, including partner Seamus Clifford, will be lining up among the competitors on the day. "This race has been a part of the local calendar for many years. It is not only a sailing experience, it is an opportunity for the community to celebrate this very special island on which we all live," he explained.
"Many of our Firm, including myself, live on the island, as do a number of our clients and so it seems natural for a local business such as Ellisons to support this focal event. Sailing round, or rather almost all the way round, emphasises our island identity and it is a privilege for Ellisons to have the opportunity to be associated with such an established community event."
More than 100 helpers are needed to make the Race possible, both on the water providing safety and support cover, and ashore running the racing and assisting at the Strood where traffic is disrupted as boats take precedence over cars. The organisers appreciate the patience of residents and visitors on this one day when you cannot escape acknowledging that Mersea is indeed an island.

Top ^ 1.08.2008 - The Weston Homes Community Stadium is granted premises license
Head of Licensing , Louise Bland, advised Colchester United Football Club on their application and subsequent hearing for a premises license for the new community stadium. The license was granted and the following joint statement was issued:
Statement jointly issued by Colchester United Football Club and its solicitors, Ellisons:
01 August 2008
We are delighted that the Licensing sub-committee hearing held at the Colchester Town Hall this afternoon has granted the stadium its premises licence which covers alcohol and entertainment.
Colchester United Football Club remains sensitive to the concerns of the local residents. Unlike Layer Road, the stadium is not limited in use to a venue for primarily football. It is a “community” facility with a number of proposed uses, such as conferences, banqueting, weddings, concerts, markets and other initiatives, intended for the benefit and enjoyment of the people of Colchester.
The license is a necessary requirement to ensure that the stadium can market itself to its full potential and meet the needs and wishes of the local community.

14.07.2008 - The Old Courthouse Inn in Great Bromley, Essex, is sold after 14 years in the same ownership
Ellisons Property Partner Guy Longhurst and Assistant Solicitor Ceri Rogers acted for the purchasers Vincent (Vinny) and Sarah Ranzulla and Sarah's mother, Pam Arran with the acquisition of The Old Courthouse Inn, a charming 18th Century village inn with 4 Star letting accommodation in the village of Great Bromley, near Colchester, Essex and also the re-financing of their existing property.
See press release below as issued by Christie & Co ________________________________________________________
The Old Courthouse Inn, a charming 18th Century village inn with 4 Star letting accommodation in the village of Great Bromley, near Colchester, Essex, has been sold on behalf of proprietors, Terry and Carole Marshall, who are retiring after 14 successful years at the business. The Ipswich office of leading licensed property agents, Christie + Co, has sold the freehold to well known local operators Vincent (Vinny) and Sarah Ranzulla and Sarah's mother, Pam Arran; while funding for the purchase was secured by Christie Finance, the independent mortgage brokers.
As its name suggests, the Old Courthouse Inn once served as an actual courthouse, with gallows situated across the road. The property dates back to 1722 and became an inn in 1822. Over the past 14 years, Terry and Carole have restored the inn, doubling its size to create the accommodation, and established its reputation for offering some of the best pub accommodation and fine dining in Essex. Perfectly situated on the edge of Constable Country, just six miles from Dedham, the Old Courthouse Inn is within seven miles of historic Colchester, 10 miles from Harwich and within easy reach of the seaside resorts of Clacton-on-Sea, Frinton-on-Sea and Walton on the Naze. The detached property briefly comprises a bar and lounge to seat 40, a restaurant to seat 50, 10 en suite letting bedrooms with a 4 Star tourist board rating, a courtyard garden and a large car park. The owners' four-bedroom house, with separate parking and private garden, was included in the purchase price.
Bill Colquhoun, director of Christie + Co's Ipswich office, comments: "We are delighted to have sold the freehold interest in the Old Courthouse Inn upon the retirement of Mr and Mrs Marshall to Mr and Mrs Ranzulla and Mrs Arran. Although this is their first pub purchase, the Ranzullas are well known local business operators, having formerly owned Sam's Diner, a restaurant and take-away in Colchester, and prior to that a post office in the Colchester area. Vinny, Sarah and Pam intend to create a function room to host wedding receptions, private parties and corporate events, introduce a new menu of home-cooked food and also hold occasional live music events."
"Our clients, Mr and Mrs Ranzulla, were let down by their existing bankers who presented a finance package which was expensive, contained onerous conditions and did not match their requirements," adds Nicholas Baker of Christie Finance. "We delivered a bespoke solution enabling this transaction to proceed. With an exceptional reputation in the local area, I am sure the Ranzullas will enhance an already established and profitable business. We wish them all the best for the future."
The Old Courthouse Inn was sold of an undisclosed figure after Christie + Co sought £875,000 for the freehold interest.

5.07.2008 - Colchester Royal Sale Success - £444,634 Total
The Sale by Auction of the Collection of the Queen Mother's faithful butler - the late William Tallon who died last November - held at the Reeman Dansie auction house today has proved a great success with a number of bidding war surprises.
The Sale attracted a phenomenal amount of interest requiring Reeman Dansie to reprint the sale catalogue after only a couple of weeks. Attendance on the day was as expected, with over 400 turning up throughout the 10 ½ hour auction. However, the number of bidders far exceeded those attending with a further 400 registering bids in advance as well as all six telephone lines being fully occupied. Also, a first for this Essex auction house, there was live bidding via the internet as organised by the-saleroom.com. The organisation registered 194 potential bidders for the sale from all over the world with over 20 from the United States. At any one time during the day there was an average of 90 people online and 117 lots worth in total over £40,000 were sold this way.
Stephen Lansley, long-term legal adviser and friend of the deceased, who is the Executor of Tallon's Estate is delighted with the result: "There was surprise in some circles that I had chosen Colchester and Reemans to hold this sale rather than a London auction house. The reasoning behind this was that as Executor, I needed a considerable degree of liaison with the auctioneer over issues of provenance, and as Ellisons, the firm of solicitors in which I am a partner, is based in Colchester, there were significant benefits to selecting a local auction house. This made good sense, especially because we have an auction house of the quality of Reemans on our doorstep. The success of this sale has more than justified my choice. The truth is, however, that with the combination of the fantastic forward publicity and the technological advancement of the internet and the ability to bid via a website, as well as the more commonly used phone lines, this auction could have taken place on the moon."
Those attending the event and the previews held on the Thursday and Friday, included a number of friends of the deceased, members of the royal household past and present, members of the public with a keen interest in the royal family and of course collectors from around the world.
The morning started at a brisk pace but it was soon evident that auctioneer James Grinter's target of completing 100 lots an hour was a little ambitious. The interest, particularly in the items of correspondence from the Royal Family, meant that the time spent on each lot exceeded expectation. Actual prices achieved for most of these letters were two or three times the estimate with those from Princess Diana attracting, as anticipated, a great deal of interest.
However, it was lot 96, a group of handwritten notes written to William by HM Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother, which included the instructions, "I think that I will take two small bottles of Dubonnet and gin with me this morning in case it is needed", which caused the biggest intake of breath, as it fetched £16,000 (sixteen thousand pounds) when the estimate was a mere £300 (three hundred pounds)
Other "surprises" in terms of exceeding estimates included:
1. The beautiful presentation silver box by Garrards, which is emblazoned with the Queen Mother's Royal Arms and inscribed 'For William Tallon on the occasion of his 65th birthday 12th November 2000 from Elizabeth R Clarence House', which had an estimate of £600-£1,000 but sold for £5,400 (five thousand four hundred pounds);
2. Lot 545, an oil of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother by Sir James Gunn, a reduced replica of the painting that was exhibited at The Royal Academy in 1945 and that now hangs in Clarence House, which achieved the highest item price of the day at £30,000 (thirty thousand pounds);
3. Edward Seago's "Half Tide on the Orwell" which made £20,000 (twenty thousand pounds) against an estimate of £8,000.
Also in the picture section there were works by Royal portrait painter Richard Stone and artist Roy Petley, both of whom were present on the day. Petley's 30 items sold well with several selling for three times their estimates.
The sale concluded at just after 8.30pm with all 700 lots sold. It had been anticipated that the sale would raise between £250,000 and £300,000. However, at the conclusion of the event, the total sales figure was £444,634 (Four hundred and forty four thousand, six hundred and thirty four pounds).
The last word must go to the auctioneer of this marathon sale, James Grinter: "A wonderful collection and a fantastic result"

03.07.2008 - Ellisons funds Computer Components for the Jigsaw Study Centre, Colchester
Autism Anglia was the nominated charity for Ellisons Solicitors for its financial year 2007/8. When the charity was asked whether there was any particular project which the firm of solicitors could support with a donation, Fundraising Officer Anna Rogers immediately thought of an initiative involving The Jigsaw Study Centre.
The Jigsaw Study Centre is Autism Anglia's (the new name for The Essex Autistic Society) Day Centre for adults with autism. Situated in Gosbecks Road, Colchester, the centre provides structured activities for 50 adults who attend weekly sessions. Activities include woodcraft, art, PE, life-skills and IT. There is also a sensory room at the centre.
Ellisons Solicitor and Notary, Judith Winward, visited the Jigsaw Centre on Tuesday 1st July to meet a student who is benefiting from the donation from Ellisons. Richard has a very high computing ability and needs challenging. With the donated £500 (five hundred pounds), Jigsaw has purchased the components needed to construct a computer to their own specification. The components will be used as a long-term project to build a computer that will challenge and focus the higher ability students but which can then be used by other students within the IT suite.
Judith is a long-term supporter of the charity and was delighted to be able to see for herself the positive impact of her Firm funding the project. "Whilst we appreciate Autism Anglia's constant need for financial support for it to continue with the fantastic work it does in supporting individuals with autism and their families, I must confess that it was very satisfying seeing the effect our donation has had on an individual such as Richard - much more so than it would have been if we had just handed over a general donation cheque."

19.06.2008 - Ellisons Angels blazing a gruelling trail to help Oxfam stamp out poverty
Ellisons Angels, a team from Colchester, sponsored by local firm Ellisons and comprising a number of Ellisons' solicitors, is taking part in an epic challenge this summer to walk the equivalent of two and a half marathons in under 30 hours.
The team of four: Lisa Anderson, Ceri Rogers, Marsha Robinson and Megan Rogers , has been in training for several months for this fundraising event which was started by Gurkha soldiers in Hong Kong in 1981 as a training exercise to test endurance and encourage teamwork. It is now a global phenomenon with events held in Australia, New Zealand, Hong Kong and Japan as well as in the UK.
Trailwalker is one of the hardest team events in the world - requiring groups of four to cover a 100km course across the beautiful South Downs in less than 30 hours which means that most will have to walk on through the night. The teams must start together, stick together throughout the course and finish together.
Marsha Robinson said: "I am really excited to be taking part in Trailwalker this summer. It is a chance to take on a really tough challenge with a group of friends."
Lisa Anderson agreed: "We all need to work together to complete a gruelling course and at the same time raise money for two worthwhile causes. Our target is £2,000 and with Ellisons' sponsorship, we are very nearly there"
Ceri Rogers concluded: "We would like to smash the £2,000 target and we are hoping that with a little help from the people of Colchester we can do that."
Sponsorship for the event is one of the most important and challenging elements. Each team must raise at least £1,500 to support Oxfam's work in relieving poverty and suffering around the world, and The Gurkha Welfare Trust in helping Gurkha ex-servicemen and their families in Nepal. You can support the Ellisons Angels team by going to: www.justgiving.com/ellisonsangels or by sending cheques made payable to Oxfam c/o Lisa Anderson, Ellisons Solicitors, Headgate Court, Head Street, Colchester CO1 1NP.

11.06.2008 - ESTATE OF ROYAL BUTLER TO OFFER PERSONAL COLLECTION AT COLCHESTER AUCTION IN JULY
700 lots of Royal Family memorabilia includes personal letters from Princess Diana
An exceptional collection of Royal memorabilia collected over more than 50 years, many spent as Butler to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother, is to be offered for sale by Reeman Dansie Auctioneers in Colchester on Saturday 5th July. The Essex auctioneers were appointed by Ellisons Solicitors, the Essex firm which is acting in the probate of the late William Tallon. Ellisons Partner Stephen Lansley was a long-term legal adviser of the deceased and is now Executor of his Estate.
William Tallon, who died last November, was an exceptional servant who joined the Royal Household at the age of fifteen in 1951 - fulfilling a childhood ambition. He worked his way up to become Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth, The Queen Mother's Steward and the Page of the Backstairs - an ancient title for butler which resulted in him affectionately known by the Public as 'Backstairs Billy'. He and his lifelong partner Reginald Wilcock, who was the under butler, were devoted to Her Majesty and she was to them. This special relationship is reflected by the range of items amassed by William over his fifty-one years in Royal Service. These include hundreds of Royal Christmas cards, letters, photograph albums, books, Royal Presentation gifts, pictures, sculptures, silver and objects of virtue, china, glassware and furniture totalling seven hundred lots.
Ellisons Solicitors Partner Stephen Lansley, is delighted with the choice of Reemans as auctioneers:
"There was some expectation, because of the nature of the sale, that it would take place in London. However, when you have auctioneers of the quality of Reemans on your doorstep, the choice was easy. And as for location, we believe Colchester is ideally placed to attract buyers from London as well as the East of England and nearby Stansted airport makes it viable for anyone from outside the UK."
James Grinter, Senior Partner of Reeman Dansie Auctioneers believes that there will be significant interest not just in the pieces of value but also the letters, cards and Royal Presentation gifts which give an important historic perspective of life as a member of the Royal household: "William Tallon's collection provides a rare window into the life of a Royal servant and in particular William's long-spanning career devoted to the late Queen Mother. Reeman Dansie is proud to be associated with such an exceptional collection and we anticipate a considerable amount of interest." Amongst the items going under the hammer are:
- A group of letters from Diana, Princess of Wales to William Tallon regarding her wedding and the birth of her children, with estimates ranging from £400-£1,000 each
- A beautiful presentation silver box by Garrards, which is emblazoned with the Queen Mother's Royal Arms and inscribed 'For William Tallon on the occasion of his 65th birthday 12th November 2000 from Elizabeth R Clarence House.' It is estimated at £600-£1,000.
- A magnificent eighteenth century Indian gold, diamond and enamel box estimated at £10,000-£15,000..
- In the picture section there are eight works by Edward Seago including an oil painting of sailing barges entitled 'Half Tide on the Orwell', estimated at £6,000-£8,000.
- On a more affordable note there is a large collection of Halcyon Days enamel boxes and Easter Eggs - a very popular Royal gift, with estimates ranging from £40-£100 per lot.
The sale will take place at Reeman Dansie's saleroom on Saturday 5th July. Catalogues will be available from early June and on-line at www.reemans.com

01.05.2008 - It's official - PTL Solicitors has merged with Ellisons Solicitors
The merger of PTL Solicitors with Ellisons, announced last November, came into effect on 01 May 2008. The merged Firm, which operates under the name of Ellisons Solicitors, now has 17 Partners and a total staff of 122.
As a result of the merger, Ellisons has strengthened its position as one of the most prominent providers of legal services in Essex. To its existing offices at Colchester, Frinton on Sea and Dovercourt, it adds a second office in Colchester and a new office at Clacton on Sea, making the firm particularly pre-eminent on the Tendring peninsula. The merged practice will also have strengthened resources in the following practice areas: Commercial Property, Corporate Commercial, Residential Property, Private Client, Employment, Family and Personal Injury.
The merger reflects Ellisons' commitment to growth, achieved through a combination of organic development and strategic mergers. It is equally in keeping with the Firm's vision to focus on commercial work, particularly through the Colchester office whilst growing its strong private client base across the region.
Ellisons' Senior Partner, Peter Powell, is delighted with the comparative ease with which the two firms have merged:
"Merger negotiations are all about testing out compatibility and identifying synergies. But you really know when a merger is going to be successful in the run up period when teams from both sides have to start working together. The networking of offices both physically in terms of IT and from the personal perspective in terms of team restructuring has been so positive. It just proves that PTL was the natural match for Ellisons."
Tim Logan, formerly Managing Partner of PTL and now Head of Private Client at the merged firm is equally pleased with the results:
"We are confident that our clients and our people will benefit from the greater opportunities presented by the merged firm, which combines two very similar cultures."
Merger celebrations naturally involve some hospitality to introduce the extended team to clients but the firm has also been delighted to confirm its support to some key sponsorships. On the 9th May, Ellisons is sponsoring the Mayor's Ball as a timely commitment to Colchester as the continued location for its head office and later in the year, the Firm will have a greater involvement in the Tendring Show as an indication of the importance of the region in particular to its private client strategy.

20.1.2008 - Ellisons boosts Private Client team with specialist Daniel Ager
Daniel Ager has joined Ellisons Solicitors in Colchester from Birketts LLP in Ipswich. Daniel, an Assistant Solicitor, advises on Wills, Trusts, Lasting Powers of Attorney and administration of estates. He is also a specialist in Inheritance Tax Planning through the use of Wills and Trusts.
Although Daniel is Ipswich born and bred, his decision to move career over the county border to Essex is not without a precedent. Before attending the College of Law in York, Daniel studied Philosophy at the University of Essex.
Daniel joins the Ellisons' Private Client team at a very opportune time. With the planned merger with PTL Solicitors in May 2008, Ellisons will have a greatly enhanced team providing services to the private client. All the combined Firm's offices - Colchester, Clacton, Frinton on Sea and Dovercourt - will have Private Client departments.
Daniel recognises the excellent timing for his arrival: "The merger announcement in November was most definitely a bonus in terms of joining Ellisons at this time. With a greater geographical reach of offices and better resourced teams, we can be even more accessible to our private clients in the whole East Anglian region. I look forward to being a vital part of this expansion strategy."
Senior Partner Peter Powell is delighted to welcome Daniel to the Firm. "Ellisons has been providing a full range of legal services to private individuals in the region for about 250 years. It is a very specialist area because as well as needing to be excellent legal advisers, the private client lawyer needs the skills for dealing with clients and families of clients at some very difficult and personal periods of their lives. Daniel's experience, expertise and personal attributes makes him an excellent fit for the Firm and its future."
Daniel joined the Firm on 7 January 2008. He is a very keen yachtsman and has competed at national and international events to world Championship level.

But the very first to sign and to secure Box 11 was Guy Longhurst of Ellisons Solicitors: "Ellisons and Colchester United enjoy a very special relationship. As the Club's solicitors we have been actively involved in the Cuckoo Farm project for many years and are delighted that the club and the town will soon have a wonderful new stadium. We are proud of the Firm's long association with the club and felt it was right to demonstrate our confidence in the club and its future at the new stadium by being the first to sign up for an executive suite."
Jason Berry, Sales and Marketing Manager at Colchester United FC was delighted with the success of the launch: "What a fantastic start to the marketing campaign. Naturally, it is very pleasing to have so many sold on the first day of release but more importantly we are delighted to see so many members of the Colchester business community happy to step up and show their support for what we aim to achieve at the new stadium. Special thanks go to Ellisons for being first and setting the sales process rolling."
