22.12.2008 - Ellisons Solicitors explore the "for better and worse" of the Christmas season

With January traditionally being a peak month for matrimonial law enquiries and the Guy Ritchie and Madonna split shining a few festive spotlights on divorce, in the week before Christmas, Family lawyers from Ellisons conducted a seasonal mini-survey to see what the people of Colchester think about the current state of marriage and their views on some of the recent high media profile divorces.

The mini survey which had 81 respondents focused on four main issues;

  • The impact of Christmas on relationships;

  • Is there a touch of sexism in divorce?

  • Effects on divorce from the economic downturn;

  • The truth about cohabitation rights.

When asked whether Christmas can be a stressful time for relationships, the people of Colchester are in an optimistic mood with 65% seeing the season as positive; 15% perceived it had no effect on relationships and only 20% viewed it as an additionally stressful time.

People were also asked their views on the Guy Ritchie and Madonna divorce and whether they felt Guy Ritchie should seek a share of Madonna's wealth. The bulk of the questionnaires were completed at a time when it was reported that Guy Ritchie was to walk away with nothing. An astounding 85% thought that Guy Ritchie receiving nothing would be fair although there was a higher percentage of agreeing female respondents (91%) than male (77%). If the division of wealth was reversed, however, only 36% felt that Madonna would have had a justifiable claim on Ritchie's assets. Comments supporting the question suggest that in divorces with significant money on both sides, the division should reflect their independent wealth with a very strong sentiment, and that no matter how wealthy where children are involved, the party responsible for their care should be treated most favourably.

When asked whether people are more or less likely to divorce in the current economic climate, the results were fairly neutral with 33% believing it would make no difference. Less positive, however, was the contrast of 47% believing that the divorce rate is likely to increase and only 20% predicting it will reduce.

The final question looked at cohabitation rights. A worrying 37% of respondents believed that if you lived with someone long enough, you had the same rights as if you were married and a further 17% didn't know. From the Respondents who were cohabiting 47% thought they did have the same rights and a further 13% didn't know. Only 40% of cohabitants knew that there was no such thing as a 'common law spouse'. It was a worrying trend that those already cohabiting thought that they automatically had rights. They were certainly not aware of the option that cohabiting couples had the option to legally ensure that through cohabitation agreements, specially drafted wills and if house owners, a clear and documented agreement about how large a share they have in their home, they could protect their assets if they later unfortunately separated or if one of them died.

Lisa Anderson, one of the Family law specialists at Ellisons, who conducted the survey commented:
"We appreciate that this is only a snapshot of the general public's opinions and with more time and a greater sample, the research would be more robust but it has thrown up some quite interesting trends. We were delighted that on the whole the people of Colchester were positive about Christmas and yet understandably had concerns about the impact of the economic downturn on relationships. There is, as we expected, a subtle confirmation that men and women continue to think differently in terms of what is just in terms of divorce settlements but the most concerning theme must be without doubt, the results of the cohabitation question. There are quite simply too many people, particularly women, who naively continue to cohabit without legal advice in the belief that they have the same rights as a married spouse."

In recognition and thanks for the time respondents gave to completing the questionnaire, a donation is being made to Headway, Essex. This is the charity selected by Ellisons as its charity of the year 2008/9 to benefit from various fundraising initiatives.

21.10.2008 - Local Businesses help Mersea Islanders plough their furrows

On Saturday 18th October, Mersea Islanders gathered at Dawes Lane to witness the age old tradition of the ploughing match.

The match started at 10.00am and spectators were able to enjoy a selection of food and drink from John Gray Meats, Mersea Brewery and the Company Shed. There was also a Farmer's Market selling local produce and Classic Tractors were on display alongside a number of trade stands.

At 3.00pm there was a prize giving for the following classes: see attached results

As well as class sponsors, a number of local businesses donated monies. Ellisons Solicitors was more than happy to be one of the key supporters of the event with a donation of £500, as Partner Andrew Tilsley explains:
"Many of our Firm, including myself, live on the island, as do a number of our clients and so it seems natural for a local business such as Ellisons to support this focal event. Farming is an important sector for our business and it is a privilege for Ellisons to have the opportunity to play its part in keeping alive the traditions of our rural communities."

Organisers, David Leggett and Sarah Baldwin were delighted with the day. David said: "There is no denying that it is a lot of hard work to organise this event. However, with the help of local businesses, huge community support and of course very talented ploughmen and women, we are committed to keeping these traditions alive on the island of Mersea."

The event, which was resurrected in 2006 after a gap of 55 years, will hopefully be held again in two years time. The competition has the support of the NFU and raised funds for the Royal Agricultural Benevolent Institution.

As a result of the event, a donation of £2,500 was made to RABI and £60 to the local scouts for organising the car park.

8.10.2008 - Ellisons Solicitors celebrates merger and helps light up Clacton for Christmas

Ellisons Solicitors is a new name on Clacton's Station Road. The leading Essex law firm, with offices also in Colchester, Frinton and Dovercourt was delighted to finally add Clacton to its network of offices on the Tendring peninsula with the merger of PTL Solicitors last May.

Last night, at a reception at the Kingscliff Hotel, some 100 guests - clients and contacts of the Firm from Clacton and the surrounding region - celebrated the merger in style.

Host Nicky Coates, who is the partner responsible for managing both the Frinton and Clacton offices, was happy to welcome everyone to the party. Nicky explained "The merger was significant for Ellisons and we now have a significant presence on the Tendring peninsula." I have been based in Frinton now for over four years, and it is clear to me and my partners that for towns such as Clacton and Frinton, it is not just a matter of providing the services required but also to be able to provide those services in the context of being part of the community and appreciating local issues."

With this mind, Ellisons , post merger, Ellisons joined the Clacton Chamber of Trade and Tourism. Employment Partner Jayne Scott, who is the Firm's key representative for the Chamber commented: "We were delighted that an opportunity for us to demonstrate our commitment to the area has materialised in the form of the Clacton Christmas Lights Appeal which is being spearheaded by the Clacton Gazette, the Chamber's Clacton Community Projects working party and fellow Chamber member Dream 100. It seems appropriate timing as we celebrate our presence in Clacton with this party, to present our donation to this very worthy cause tonight."

Nicky Coates was happy to present a cheque for £500 to Ron Stephenson, husband of the Chamber's President, Teresa Stephenson, who thanked the Firm for making such a significant contribution to its £10,000 target.

30.09.2008 - Ellisons Solicitors steps into Suffolk with Wanham Longhurst Acquisition

Ellisons Solicitors, with offices in Colchester, Clacton on Sea, Dovercourt and Frinton on Sea, has crossed the county border into Suffolk for the first time with the acquisition of sole practitioner Tony Longhurst's practice in Bury St Edmunds.

Wanham Longhurst & Co, which offers primarily residential conveyancing services with some commercial property and wills and probate, will cease operating on 30th September 2008 when the Firm will be formally incorporated with Ellisons. Tony Longhurst retires after thirty seven years of practice as a Solicitor, twenty five of them based in Bury St Edmunds; the previous twelve as a partner in a firm in Cambridgeshire.

Tony Longhurst's decision to retire and entrust his clients to Essex-based Ellisons may cause some surprise because of the perceived geographic focus of his choice of successor but in fact Ellisons was the natural choice. Guy Longhurst, Tony's son, who lives in Suffolk and is a past pupil of Culford School, is a Commercial Property specialist and one of the Managing Partners of Ellisons Solicitors.

"Ellisons is by far the best firm of solicitors to look after my clients on my retirement." explains Tony. "It means a great deal to me that it will be my son's firm caring for my clients and advising them on their future legal affairs. Keeping it "in the family", so to speak, has been warmly received by most of my clients who value the continuity of the personal connection. In addition, there are the obvious benefits in that Ellisons can not only provide my clients with all the same services but very much more."

Guy Longhurst also recognises the personal appeal and the business logic of acquiring his father's firm and was delighted that the proposal won the full support of the partnership:

"Taking over my fathers practice makes good commercial sense. Although Essex - based, Ellisons acts for clients across East Anglia. The idea of having a base in Suffolk has been mooted frequently and the opportunity to acquire Wanham Longhurst & Co was just too good to miss. The business and client profile perfectly matches those of our offices on the Tendring peninsula which are essentially strong private client practices but with some commercial clients who will benefit from the wider resources in Colchester." Guy explains: "I always knew that my father would find it difficult to retire completely and so by incorporating his practice into Ellisons but staying on as a Consultant, it is a "win win" situation for both sides. "

Tony Longhurst has been considering retirement for some time with a view to spending a little more time at his holiday home in Norfolk with his wife Nora and pursuing their other interests.

Ellisons is not currently considering establishing an office in Bury St Edmunds but will primarily service clients from its other five offices and by making local arrangements to have meetings and relationship management.

5.09.2008 - WEST MERSEA VILLAGE GREEN APPLICATION VICTORY

The seven-year battle by West Mersea Town Council against the refusal by Essex County Council to grant permission to designate the Youth Field (to the rear of School Gardens) a "village green", concluded in victory yesterday for the people of Mersea when the Inspector published his report, following the Public Enquiry, recommending that the land is registered as a village green

The application was made after Essex County Council, which owns the land, had stated that the field was "surplus to requirements" and that in an effort to "maximise their assets" they could not promise not to sell it off for development.

West Mersea Town Council sought legal advice to prove that the land has been used as common land by the people of Mersea "as of right" for many years and as the last remaining green spaces in the middle of the town, it needed to be protected.

West Mersea Town Council, which has maintained the field for many years, wishes to turn the whole area into a proper public park for future generations to enjoy. Yesterday, the Inspector's published report, recommending that the land is registered as a village green, effectively safeguarded this objective and ensures that the field continues to be enjoyed by the residents of West Mersea.

Edward Powell of Ellisons, solicitors for West Mersea Town Council said "This is a stunning victory for the people of West Mersea. They have been using this field for generations and they have stood up to Essex County Council to ensure that they can continue to use it for generations to come"

Dave Tucker, Town Clerk at West Mersea Town Council, said "I am delighted with the result. The councillors have had to make some tough decisions along the way and they have showed great dedication to preserving this open space for everyone to enjoy."

The controversial signs erected by Essex County Council in 2001 in an attempt to prevent the land becoming a village green were declared by the Inspector as being inaccurate and illogical. They were ECC's "last throw of the dice" but were "ineffective"

Essex County Council (which still own the land) must now implement the Inspectors findings and register the land as a village green. This formal process is likely to take a further few months.

A copy of the Inspector's Report is available on request. Contact Teresa Harman on 07770 425068.

2.08.2008 - West Mersea Yacht Club's Round Island Race 2008 - Sponsor Ellisons Solicitors goes round again.

Ellisons Solicitors has proved that it is not just "fair weather friend" to the West Mersea Yacht Club. In spite of last year's inclement conditions resulting in a last-minute cancellation of the event, the local law firm is once again the proud sponsor for the annual 'Round the Island' race,

Well over a hundred dinghies and small boats of all shapes and sizes are expected to circumnavigate the Island in this West Mersea Yacht Club organised race, which takes place this year on Wednesday the 20th August, mid-way through Mersea Week.

Entries close on Wednesday 13 August 2008, after which time competitors will be watching the weather in order to plan their strategies which importantly includes the option to choose which way round to sail. Crews decide at the last moment whether to go clockwise or anti-clockwise around the Island, crossing the Strood with the help of the friends, family and soldiers from MCTC in Colchester,

The big challenge for the serious contenders will be to beat the record set in 2002 by John Ready and his crew Courteney Woodward who circumnavigated the island in 56 minutes and 3 seconds in their Hurricane 5.9 catamaran. For the rest, the serious amateur, it promises to be a great day of family fun with a post-race barbeque and music adding to the carnival atmosphere.

Various people from Ellisons, including partner Seamus Clifford, will be lining up among the competitors on the day. "This race has been a part of the local calendar for many years. It is not only a sailing experience, it is an opportunity for the community to celebrate this very special island on which we all live," he explained.

"Many of our Firm, including myself, live on the island, as do a number of our clients and so it seems natural for a local business such as Ellisons to support this focal event. Sailing round, or rather almost all the way round, emphasises our island identity and it is a privilege for Ellisons to have the opportunity to be associated with such an established community event."

More than 100 helpers are needed to make the Race possible, both on the water providing safety and support cover, and ashore running the racing and assisting at the Strood where traffic is disrupted as boats take precedence over cars. The organisers appreciate the patience of residents and visitors on this one day when you cannot escape acknowledging that Mersea is indeed an island.

1.08.2008 - The Weston Homes Community Stadium is granted premises license

Head of Licensing , Louise Bland, advised Colchester United Football Club on their application and subsequent hearing for a premises license for the new community stadium. The license was granted and the following joint statement was issued:

Statement jointly issued by Colchester United Football Club and its solicitors, Ellisons:

01 August 2008

We are delighted that the Licensing sub-committee hearing held at the Colchester Town Hall this afternoon has granted the stadium its premises licence which covers alcohol and entertainment.

Colchester United Football Club remains sensitive to the concerns of the local residents. Unlike Layer Road, the stadium is not limited in use to a venue for primarily football. It is a “community” facility with a number of proposed uses, such as conferences, banqueting, weddings, concerts, markets and other initiatives, intended for the benefit and enjoyment of the people of Colchester.

The license is a necessary requirement to ensure that the stadium can market itself to its full potential and meet the needs and wishes of the local community.

14.07.2008 - The Old Courthouse Inn in Great Bromley, Essex, is sold after 14 years in the same ownership

Ellisons Property Partner Guy Longhurst and Assistant Solicitor Ceri Rogers acted for the purchasers Vincent (Vinny) and Sarah Ranzulla and Sarah's mother, Pam Arran with the acquisition of The Old Courthouse Inn, a charming 18th Century village inn with 4 Star letting accommodation in the village of Great Bromley, near Colchester, Essex and also the re-financing of their existing property.

See press release below as issued by Christie & Co
________________________________________________________

The Old Courthouse Inn, a charming 18th Century village inn with 4 Star letting accommodation in the village of Great Bromley, near Colchester, Essex, has been sold on behalf of proprietors, Terry and Carole Marshall, who are retiring after 14 successful years at the business.

The Ipswich office of leading licensed property agents, Christie + Co, has sold the freehold to well known local operators Vincent (Vinny) and Sarah Ranzulla and Sarah's mother, Pam Arran; while funding for the purchase was secured by Christie Finance, the independent mortgage brokers.

As its name suggests, the Old Courthouse Inn once served as an actual courthouse, with gallows situated across the road. The property dates back to 1722 and became an inn in 1822. Over the past 14 years, Terry and Carole have restored the inn, doubling its size to create the accommodation, and established its reputation for offering some of the best pub accommodation and fine dining in Essex.
Perfectly situated on the edge of Constable Country, just six miles from Dedham, the Old Courthouse Inn is within seven miles of historic Colchester, 10 miles from Harwich and within easy reach of the seaside resorts of Clacton-on-Sea, Frinton-on-Sea and Walton on the Naze.
The detached property briefly comprises a bar and lounge to seat 40, a restaurant to seat 50, 10 en suite letting bedrooms with a 4 Star tourist board rating, a courtyard garden and a large car park. The owners' four-bedroom house, with separate parking and private garden, was included in the purchase price.

Bill Colquhoun, director of Christie + Co's Ipswich office, comments: "We are delighted to have sold the freehold interest in the Old Courthouse Inn upon the retirement of Mr and Mrs Marshall to Mr and Mrs Ranzulla and Mrs Arran. Although this is their first pub purchase, the Ranzullas are well known local business operators, having formerly owned Sam's Diner, a restaurant and take-away in Colchester, and prior to that a post office in the Colchester area. Vinny, Sarah and Pam intend to create a function room to host wedding receptions, private parties and corporate events, introduce a new menu of home-cooked food and also hold occasional live music events."

"Our clients, Mr and Mrs Ranzulla, were let down by their existing bankers who presented a finance package which was expensive, contained onerous conditions and did not match their requirements," adds Nicholas Baker of Christie Finance. "We delivered a bespoke solution enabling this transaction to proceed. With an exceptional reputation in the local area, I am sure the Ranzullas will enhance an already established and profitable business. We wish them all the best for the future."

The Old Courthouse Inn was sold of an undisclosed figure after Christie + Co sought £875,000 for the freehold interest.

5.07.2008 - Colchester Royal Sale Success - £444,634 Total

The Sale by Auction of the Collection of the Queen Mother's faithful butler - the late William Tallon who died last November - held at the Reeman Dansie auction house today has proved a great success with a number of bidding war surprises.

The Sale attracted a phenomenal amount of interest requiring Reeman Dansie to reprint the sale catalogue after only a couple of weeks. Attendance on the day was as expected, with over 400 turning up throughout the 10 ½ hour auction. However, the number of bidders far exceeded those attending with a further 400 registering bids in advance as well as all six telephone lines being fully occupied. Also, a first for this Essex auction house, there was live bidding via the internet as organised by the-saleroom.com. The organisation registered 194 potential bidders for the sale from all over the world with over 20 from the United States. At any one time during the day there was an average of 90 people online and 117 lots worth in total over £40,000 were sold this way.

Stephen Lansley, long-term legal adviser and friend of the deceased, who is the Executor of Tallon's Estate is delighted with the result:
"There was surprise in some circles that I had chosen Colchester and Reemans to hold this sale rather than a London auction house. The reasoning behind this was that as Executor, I needed a considerable degree of liaison with the auctioneer over issues of provenance, and as Ellisons, the firm of solicitors in which I am a partner, is based in Colchester, there were significant benefits to selecting a local auction house. This made good sense, especially because we have an auction house of the quality of Reemans on our doorstep.
The success of this sale has more than justified my choice. The truth is, however, that with the combination of the fantastic forward publicity and the technological advancement of the internet and the ability to bid via a website, as well as the more commonly used phone lines, this auction could have taken place on the moon."

Those attending the event and the previews held on the Thursday and Friday, included a number of friends of the deceased, members of the royal household past and present, members of the public with a keen interest in the royal family and of course collectors from around the world.

The morning started at a brisk pace but it was soon evident that auctioneer James Grinter's target of completing 100 lots an hour was a little ambitious. The interest, particularly in the items of correspondence from the Royal Family, meant that the time spent on each lot exceeded expectation. Actual prices achieved for most of these letters were two or three times the estimate with those from Princess Diana attracting, as anticipated, a great deal of interest.

However, it was lot 96, a group of handwritten notes written to William by HM Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother, which included the instructions, "I think that I will take two small bottles of Dubonnet and gin with me this morning in case it is needed", which caused the biggest intake of breath, as it fetched £16,000 (sixteen thousand pounds) when the estimate was a mere £300 (three hundred pounds)

Other "surprises" in terms of exceeding estimates included:

1. The beautiful presentation silver box by Garrards, which is emblazoned with the Queen Mother's Royal Arms and inscribed 'For William Tallon on the occasion of his 65th birthday 12th November 2000 from Elizabeth R Clarence House', which had an estimate of £600-£1,000 but sold for £5,400 (five thousand four hundred pounds);

2. Lot 545, an oil of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother by Sir James Gunn, a reduced replica of the painting that was exhibited at The Royal Academy in 1945 and that now hangs in Clarence House, which achieved the highest item price of the day at £30,000 (thirty thousand pounds);

3. Edward Seago's "Half Tide on the Orwell" which made £20,000 (twenty thousand pounds) against an estimate of £8,000.

Also in the picture section there were works by Royal portrait painter Richard Stone and artist Roy Petley, both of whom were present on the day. Petley's 30 items sold well with several selling for three times their estimates.

The sale concluded at just after 8.30pm with all 700 lots sold. It had been anticipated that the sale would raise between £250,000 and £300,000. However, at the conclusion of the event, the total sales figure was £444,634 (Four hundred and forty four thousand, six hundred and thirty four pounds).

The last word must go to the auctioneer of this marathon sale, James Grinter:
"A wonderful collection and a fantastic result"

03.07.2008 - Ellisons funds Computer Components for the Jigsaw Study Centre, Colchester

Autism Anglia was the nominated charity for Ellisons Solicitors for its financial year 2007/8. When the charity was asked whether there was any particular project which the firm of solicitors could support with a donation, Fundraising Officer Anna Rogers immediately thought of an initiative involving The Jigsaw Study Centre.

The Jigsaw Study Centre is Autism Anglia's (the new name for The Essex Autistic Society) Day Centre for adults with autism. Situated in Gosbecks Road, Colchester, the centre provides structured activities for 50 adults who attend weekly sessions. Activities include woodcraft, art, PE, life-skills and IT. There is also a sensory room at the centre.

Ellisons Solicitor and Notary, Judith Winward, visited the Jigsaw Centre on Tuesday 1st July to meet a student who is benefiting from the donation from Ellisons. Richard has a very high computing ability and needs challenging. With the donated £500 (five hundred pounds), Jigsaw has purchased the components needed to construct a computer to their own specification. The components will be used as a long-term project to build a computer that will challenge and focus the higher ability students but which can then be used by other students within the IT suite.

Judith is a long-term supporter of the charity and was delighted to be able to see for herself the positive impact of her Firm funding the project. "Whilst we appreciate Autism Anglia's constant need for financial support for it to continue with the fantastic work it does in supporting individuals with autism and their families, I must confess that it was very satisfying seeing the effect our donation has had on an individual such as Richard - much more so than it would have been if we had just handed over a general donation cheque."

19.06.2008 - Ellisons Angels blazing a gruelling trail to help Oxfam stamp out poverty

Ellisons Angels, a team from Colchester, sponsored by local firm Ellisons and comprising a number of Ellisons' solicitors, is taking part in an epic challenge this summer to walk the equivalent of two and a half marathons in under 30 hours.

The team of four: Lisa Anderson, Ceri Rogers, Marsha Robinson and Megan Rogers , has been in training for several months for this fundraising event which was started by Gurkha soldiers in Hong Kong in 1981 as a training exercise to test endurance and encourage teamwork. It is now a global phenomenon with events held in Australia, New Zealand, Hong Kong and Japan as well as in the UK.

Trailwalker is one of the hardest team events in the world - requiring groups of four to cover a 100km course across the beautiful South Downs in less than 30 hours which means that most will have to walk on through the night. The teams must start together, stick together throughout the course and finish together.

Marsha Robinson said: "I am really excited to be taking part in Trailwalker this summer. It is a chance to take on a really tough challenge with a group of friends."

Lisa Anderson agreed: "We all need to work together to complete a gruelling course and at the same time raise money for two worthwhile causes. Our target is £2,000 and with Ellisons' sponsorship, we are very nearly there"

Ceri Rogers concluded: "We would like to smash the £2,000 target and we are hoping that with a little help from the people of Colchester we can do that."

Sponsorship for the event is one of the most important and challenging elements. Each team must raise at least £1,500 to support Oxfam's work in relieving poverty and suffering around the world, and The Gurkha Welfare Trust in helping Gurkha ex-servicemen and their families in Nepal. You can support the Ellisons Angels team by going to: www.justgiving.com/ellisonsangels or by sending cheques made payable to Oxfam c/o Lisa Anderson, Ellisons Solicitors, Headgate Court, Head Street, Colchester CO1 1NP.

11.06.2008 - ESTATE OF ROYAL BUTLER TO OFFER PERSONAL COLLECTION AT COLCHESTER AUCTION IN JULY

700 lots of Royal Family memorabilia includes personal letters from Princess Diana

An exceptional collection of Royal memorabilia collected over more than 50 years, many spent as Butler to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother, is to be offered for sale by Reeman Dansie Auctioneers in Colchester on Saturday 5th July. The Essex auctioneers were appointed by Ellisons Solicitors, the Essex firm which is acting in the probate of the late William Tallon. Ellisons Partner Stephen Lansley was a long-term legal adviser of the deceased and is now Executor of his Estate.

William Tallon, who died last November, was an exceptional servant who joined the Royal Household at the age of fifteen in 1951 - fulfilling a childhood ambition. He worked his way up to become Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth, The Queen Mother's Steward and the Page of the Backstairs - an ancient title for butler which resulted in him affectionately known by the Public as 'Backstairs Billy'. He and his lifelong partner Reginald Wilcock, who was the under butler, were devoted to Her Majesty and she was to them. This special relationship is reflected by the range of items amassed by William over his fifty-one years in Royal Service. These include hundreds of Royal Christmas cards, letters, photograph albums, books, Royal Presentation gifts, pictures, sculptures, silver and objects of virtue, china, glassware and furniture totalling seven hundred lots.

Ellisons Solicitors Partner Stephen Lansley, is delighted with the choice of Reemans as auctioneers:

"There was some expectation, because of the nature of the sale, that it would take place in London. However, when you have auctioneers of the quality of Reemans on your doorstep, the choice was easy. And as for location, we believe Colchester is ideally placed to attract buyers from London as well as the East of England and nearby Stansted airport makes it viable for anyone from outside the UK."

James Grinter, Senior Partner of Reeman Dansie Auctioneers believes that there will be significant interest not just in the pieces of value but also the letters, cards and Royal Presentation gifts which give an important historic perspective of life as a member of the Royal household:
"William Tallon's collection provides a rare window into the life of a Royal servant and in particular William's long-spanning career devoted to the late Queen Mother. Reeman Dansie is proud to be associated with such an exceptional collection and we anticipate a considerable amount of interest."
Amongst the items going under the hammer are:

- A group of letters from Diana, Princess of Wales to William Tallon regarding her wedding and the birth of her children, with estimates ranging from £400-£1,000 each

- A beautiful presentation silver box by Garrards, which is emblazoned with the Queen Mother's Royal Arms and inscribed 'For William Tallon on the occasion of his 65th birthday 12th November 2000 from Elizabeth R Clarence House.' It is estimated at £600-£1,000.

- A magnificent eighteenth century Indian gold, diamond and enamel box estimated at £10,000-£15,000..

- In the picture section there are eight works by Edward Seago including an oil painting of sailing barges entitled 'Half Tide on the Orwell', estimated at £6,000-£8,000.

- On a more affordable note there is a large collection of Halcyon Days enamel boxes and Easter Eggs - a very popular Royal gift, with estimates ranging from £40-£100 per lot.

The sale will take place at Reeman Dansie's saleroom on Saturday 5th July. Catalogues will be available from early June and on-line at www.reemans.com

01.05.2008 - It's official - PTL Solicitors has merged with Ellisons Solicitors

The merger of PTL Solicitors with Ellisons, announced last November, came into effect on 01 May 2008. The merged Firm, which operates under the name of Ellisons Solicitors, now has 17 Partners and a total staff of 122.

As a result of the merger, Ellisons has strengthened its position as one of the most prominent providers of legal services in Essex. To its existing offices at Colchester, Frinton on Sea and Dovercourt, it adds a second office in Colchester and a new office at Clacton on Sea, making the firm particularly pre-eminent on the Tendring peninsula. The merged practice will also have strengthened resources in the following practice areas: Commercial Property, Corporate Commercial, Residential Property, Private Client, Employment, Family and Personal Injury.

The merger reflects Ellisons' commitment to growth, achieved through a combination of organic development and strategic mergers. It is equally in keeping with the Firm's vision to focus on commercial work, particularly through the Colchester office whilst growing its strong private client base across the region.

Ellisons' Senior Partner, Peter Powell, is delighted with the comparative ease with which the two firms have merged:

"Merger negotiations are all about testing out compatibility and identifying synergies. But you really know when a merger is going to be successful in the run up period when teams from both sides have to start working together. The networking of offices both physically in terms of IT and from the personal perspective in terms of team restructuring has been so positive. It just proves that PTL was the natural match for Ellisons."

Tim Logan, formerly Managing Partner of PTL and now Head of Private Client at the merged firm is equally pleased with the results:

"We are confident that our clients and our people will benefit from the greater opportunities presented by the merged firm, which combines two very similar cultures."

Merger celebrations naturally involve some hospitality to introduce the extended team to clients but the firm has also been delighted to confirm its support to some key sponsorships. On the 9th May, Ellisons is sponsoring the Mayor's Ball as a timely commitment to Colchester as the continued location for its head office and later in the year, the Firm will have a greater involvement in the Tendring Show as an indication of the importance of the region in particular to its private client strategy.

20.1.2008 - Ellisons boosts Private Client team with specialist Daniel Ager

Daniel Ager has joined Ellisons Solicitors in Colchester from Birketts LLP in Ipswich. Daniel, an Assistant Solicitor, advises on Wills, Trusts, Lasting Powers of Attorney and administration of estates. He is also a specialist in Inheritance Tax Planning through the use of Wills and Trusts.

Although Daniel is Ipswich born and bred, his decision to move career over the county border to Essex is not without a precedent. Before attending the College of Law in York, Daniel studied Philosophy at the University of Essex.

Daniel joins the Ellisons' Private Client team at a very opportune time. With the planned merger with PTL Solicitors in May 2008, Ellisons will have a greatly enhanced team providing services to the private client. All the combined Firm's offices - Colchester, Clacton, Frinton on Sea and Dovercourt - will have Private Client departments.

Daniel recognises the excellent timing for his arrival: "The merger announcement in November was most definitely a bonus in terms of joining Ellisons at this time. With a greater geographical reach of offices and better resourced teams, we can be even more accessible to our private clients in the whole East Anglian region. I look forward to being a vital part of this expansion strategy."

Senior Partner Peter Powell is delighted to welcome Daniel to the Firm. "Ellisons has been providing a full range of legal services to private individuals in the region for about 250 years. It is a very specialist area because as well as needing to be excellent legal advisers, the private client lawyer needs the skills for dealing with clients and families of clients at some very difficult and personal periods of their lives. Daniel's experience, expertise and personal attributes makes him an excellent fit for the Firm and its future."

Daniel joined the Firm on 7 January 2008. He is a very keen yachtsman and has competed at national and international events to world Championship level.

26.07.2007 - West Mersea Yacht Club's Round Island Race 2007
- Ellisons Solicitors on board as new Sponsors

Local law firm, Ellisons Solicitors is this year's sponsor for the annual 'Round the Island' race, which will see dinghies and small boats of all shapes and sizes sailing around Mersea.

Well over a hundred boats are expected to circumnavigate the Island in this West Mersea Yacht Club organised race, which takes place on Wednesday the 15th August, mid-way through Mersea Week

Entries close on Wednesday 8th August, after which time competitors will be watching the weather in order to plan their strategies which importantly includes the option to choose which way round to sail.

Ellisons partner Seamus Clifford will be lining up among the competitors in his B14 fast dinghy. "This race is much more than a sailing club experience. It is an opportunity for the community to come together to celebrate this very special island on which we all live," he explained.

7.06.2007 - Ellisons celebrate sponsorship with finalists of the University of Essex mooting competition

Ellisons Solicitors held a reception for the finalists, friends and supporters of the University of Essex mooting competition, at its Head Street offices in Colchester on the 7th June.

The winners of the competition, which took place on Friday 27th April were Dan Messenger and Bethan Onions. The two were presented with the shield and the new Ellisons cup, as well as a cash prize of £75.00 each, by Graeme Wallington, Partner and Head of Litigation at this leading Essex firm.

Runners up, Tomasz Hara and Alicja Szczesniak, received cash prizes, certificates and bottles of wine. Matthew Bennett and Jennifer Woodham, who came third received wine and certificates.

This was the first year that Ellisons Solicitors has supported the mooting team and partner Graeme Wallington is delighted with the results:
"As our local university, Essex is extremely important to the Firm. A number of our solicitors are Alumni and as more and more students attend university closer to home, we recognise that the Ellisons partners of the future are very likely to be University of Essex students of today and the years to come. Our aim with this sponsorship was to get more involved with the student body and to provide support greater than just financial. Not only has this objective been achieved but I have very much enjoyed judging the mooting events and observing for myself the skills and talents of these young advocates."

2006/7 Moot mistress Carol Youngman welcomed the support: "We had not considered looking for sponsorship and so we were delighted to be approached by Ellisons with the proposal. It made a real difference to have Ellisons' support and with their continued input, I believe mooting at Essex could go from strength to strength and future teams could be serious contenders in some of the national competitions."

The £500 sponsorship money from Ellisons Solicitors is primarily intended for supporting the University mooting teams compete in the three major mooting competitions: ESU Essex Court, Midlands and Oxford University Press. Any excess can be used for prize money in the University's internal competition.

14.05.2007 - Ellisons Solicitors doubles office in Frinton as it acquires Peter Leaman's practice

Ellisons Solicitors in Frinton on Sea is to double its office space in Connaught Avenue in acquiring the practice of Peter Leaman, just next door on the corner with Fourth Avenue.

Peter Leaman, a practising solicitor since 1954, who has been advising the residents of Frinton since 1964, has decided it is now time to retire.

As a sole practitioner, Peter has negotiated a handover of his practice to neighbouring Ellisons Solicitors. Peter Leaman Solicitors ceased operating on Monday 14th May when the Firm was formally incorporated with Ellisons.

"Ellisons was the ideal choice," explains Peter." Not only can they provide my clients with all the same services but by taking over the office, my clients don't even have to use a different front door. On a more serious note, however, having held a practice in the town for over forty years, it was important to me to be able to hand over the interests of my clients to a Firm I respect and trust. I believe I have found the right Firm in Ellisons and in particular in resident partner Nicky Coates and her team. I am confident that those who have entrusted me to look after their affairs will continue to enjoy a high level of personal service and legal proficiency from Ellisons"

Ellisons Partner Nicky Coates is excited by the new opportunities of this acquisition but recognises it will be a challenge:

"Peter is an established personality in Frinton and we appreciate that it is not a given that his clients will choose to use us. We hope, however, that they will give us the opportunity to prove ourselves to them and maybe even allow us to demonstrate some of the benefits of being a larger practice with a broader range of skills, particularly in relation to our Colchester office. We wish Peter all the very best in his retirement and promise that we will work hard to ensure that he continues to be confident in his choice of successor."

It is planned to merge the two offices literally by knocking through from one building to the other, giving a total space of approximately 2000 square feet. All communication systems will be merged with immediate effect to provide a seamless handover to clients and contacts. The key services provided by the Frinton office, which reflect those provided by Peter Leaman, will continue to be Residential Property, Wills & Probate and Family. A wider range of services is available from solicitors based at Ellisons' main office in Colchester.

04.05.2007 - Promoted! Peter Powell is Ellisons' new senior partner as Firm announces new financial year promotions

Ellisons Solicitors is pleased to announce that Peter Powell is taking over the reins of Senior Partner from Bryn Smart, who steps down as partner but will continue to act for clients in the role of "Consultant" with the Colchester- based firm of solicitors. The Firm is also pleased to announce the promotion of Employment Law specialist Jayne Scott to Partner and Litigator Judith Winward to Associate.

New Senior Partner Peter Powell is a Commercial Property specialist and a prominent figure in the local community as a Director of local football team Colchester United and as one of the partners of Colchester2020, the Local Strategic Partnership for Colchester. As Peter takes up the challenge of Senior Partner for a second time, Kevin Wilsher takes over from him as Head of Commercial Property for the Firm.

Jayne Scott is pivotal to the Firm's Employment Law Department and has developed a strong reputation among both local and London based clients. She advises on all aspects of the fast moving area of employment law and also represents clients at Employment Tribunal.

Judith Winward started with the firm as a Trainee in 2000 following a first career in journalism with eight years at the Evening Gazette in Colchester before deciding to study law at Essex University. Judith specialises primarily in resolving civil and commercial disputes but is also a qualified Notary, only one of three in Colchester.

Peter Powell was happy to comment "I am delighted to take over the role of Senior Partner at such an exciting and buoyant time for the Firm. This year's promotions reflect the firm's success in attracting and choosing at entry level the right calibre and personality of individuals who can make it all the way to partnership. Sixty per cent of our partners started with Ellisons as Trainees and these strong roots are very much key to the Firm's continuing growth and development." Peter continues, "I would also like to take this opportunity, to thank Bryn Smart who has been an inspirational leader and a father figure to most of us here. Next year, Bryn would have been a partner for 30 years but I'm sure that a mere change in title will not prevent us from celebrating such a significant contribution to the Firm which we hope will continue for many years to come."

All three promotions came into effect on 1 May 2007

10.04.2007 - Ellisons boosts Property team with Housing specialist Steven Harris

Steven Harris joins Ellisons Solicitors in Colchester as an Assistant Solicitor in the Commercial Property team. This is the second hire for the department this year as Tom McPhie joined in January.

Steven, who currently lives in Chelmsford, started his legal career at Swan Housing Association in Billericay where he worked for almost three years before joining a City based firm which is recognised as a leader in the field of social housing. Originally from the Midlands, Steven made his home in Essex after graduating from the University of Wolverhampton.

Steven specialises in Registered Social Landlords (RSLs) work, particularly site acquisitions and disposals but also advises on the broader aspects of both residential and commercial property. His expertise is a perfect fit for Ellisons' property client base which includes key local players in both social housing and housing development.

Guy Longhurst, Property Partner and one of the Firm's Managing Partners is delighted to welcome Steven to the team:
"Property has always been the Firm's strongest area of practice and Steven will be a welcome addition to the team particularly in terms of his social housing experience. We recognise the need to grow and attract new expertise in order to meet our client's changing requirements and our most recent recruits will most certainly help us to achieve just that."

Steven is equally positive about his decision:
"I enjoyed gaining City experience but knew that in the long term there were too many advantages, both personal and professional, of working in the same community in which you live. I looked for a local firm with a warm culture and a strong reputation in Property and was delighted to find Ellisons"

13.02.2007 - Five A Day - the Ellisons way!

Healthy eating is always on the agenda post Christmas festivities but local law firm Ellisons is doing its bit to help staff at their Colchester, Frinton and Dovercourt offices make their New Year resolutions last a little longer by providing free fresh fruit.

Luckily for Ellisons, they had the ideal supplier in client Fruit Works which delivers a box of seasonal items every Monday morning for distribution to the kitchens and the client reception.

The Ellisons partner behind the scheme is Edward Powell who said "We appreciate that this is not a new concept but it is a simple one. It is now pretty well the norm to provide hot beverages free in offices and this move is just a further small step to show that we care about our people." Alan Dearsley, the Firm's Office Manager agrees," Being busy sometimes means we don't have time to eat the right things. Providing free fruit to everyone in the office might help us all stay a little healthier and happier which is a winning situation for all concerned."

08.01.2007 - Ellisons boosts Property team with Planning Lawyer Tom McPhie

Tom McPhie joins Ellisons Solicitors in Colchester, after spending nearly ten years in the Legal Services Department at Colchester Borough Council

Tom, who has lived in Colchester all his life, decided on law as a career relatively late in life when at the age of 30 he enrolled at Essex University. After graduating with a law degree, he started a training contract with the Borough Council and has been a valued member of the Council's legal team until joining Ellisons this week.

The former Borough Principal Solicitor specialises in advising on planning matters both contentious and non-contentious and his skills extend from general advice and drafting planning agreements to prosecution work. During his time at the Council, Tom has been involved in many local planning initiatives including advising on the Hythe regeneration area as well as many of the more recent Colchester renaissance projects.

Guy Longhurst, Property Partner and one of the Firm's Managing Partners is delighted to welcome Tom to the team:
"Property has always been the Firm's strongest area of practice and Tom with his local authority background and planning capability is an ideal team member as we work on a number of Colchester renaissance projects and compete for London work and the opportunities offered by such initiatives as the Olympics and the Haven Gateway projects"

Tom is equally positive about his decision:
"During my time at the Council, I came into contact with a number of Ellisons staff and have always been impressed by their professionalism. The opportunity to move into private practice with a Firm I already knew so well was just too attractive. I am very excited about working with a greater variety of clients and about the huge scope of projects in which I will be involved. I also aim to retain good links with my former colleagues at the Borough Council and to continue to offer them my support and commitment"

Tom joins an experienced Property team at Ellisons which is led by partners Peter Powell, Bryn Smart, Guy Longhurst and Kevin Wilsher.

22.12.2006 - Ellisons helps Braidwood touch down in New Zealand

Colchester Rugby Club 1st XV player Mark Braidwood sets off for New Zealand early January 2007 with a little help from local law firm Ellisons Solicitors.

The 20 year old from Colchester is pursuing an opportunity of a lifetime when he gives up his place on the Colchester squad and his job as a heating engineer with Turner May, to follow his dream to further his rugby career by heading for New Zealand and a new team in Napier, Hawkes Bay.

The Kiwi adventure is the result of a friendship formed with former team mate Shane Manning who played for Colchester for two years before returning home to New Zealand. Braidwood jumped at the opportunity to improve his rugby skills and enjoy an antipodean lifestyle when Manning proposed a return match down under. The decision was made even easier when 1st XV sponsors Ellisons Solicitors donated five hundred pounds to help the talented youngster on his way.

Mark Braidwood is very grateful for the financial support: "It is not just the money although I admit that does of course help. But knowing that a firm like Ellisons believes I have potential and is prepared to put its name and money to help me achieve my objectives, really gives me confidence."

Robert Jones, Head of Personal Injury at Ellisons explains why the Firm is happy to support Braidwood in his new life:
"There is a personal connection in that I have known Mark and his family for many years and am delighted to be in a position to assist him in making this journey to explore how far he can get in the sport he so loves. But even without my influence, Ellisons has always supported the local community. The Firm appreciates the profile gained through its rugby sponsorship but more importantly we believe in supporting the youth of our region as they are our future employees, colleagues and clients."

John Powell, Chairman of Colchester Rugby Club comments, "We are proud that Mark learnt his rugby through the club's Mini and Youth sections and has been an outstanding member of our 1st XV for the past 3 years .We will miss him. We are of course delighted that this contact has come about and maybe Mark will bring a Kiwi [ rugby player ] back home with him. We are grateful to Ellisons who have independently offered this support to Mark and also for their assistance as one of our 1st XV Sponsors - support which is invaluable to a Community Sports Club and helps to ensure our sustainability".

Other current Ellisons' sponsorships, involving young people in the Borough, include the sponsorship of the Arts Award in the Colchester Youth Awards and supporting youth football teams Wormingford Wanderers and Lexden Saints (under 13s).

The Awards were the inspiration of Dave Petrie and Matthew Young who had the support of former Colchester mayor Terry Sutton but current mayor Richard Gower was happy to have the baton passed to him as part of his mayoral role:

"As a Borough we should all celebrate the success of our young people and this event is a fitting tribute to them all." declares Richard. "It is the youth of Colchester which makes the town such a great place to live in. They truly are our future."

The Colchester Youth Awards were created to celebrate the achievements of young people across the Borough. The programme is supported and organised by a group of volunteers from a range of public and private organisations who form the Awards Partnership. The partnership is chaired by Dave Petrie, the Colchester Locality Manager for the Essex Youth Service who speaks for all when he says:
"Everyone involved understands the importance and value represented by this event this evening. We all know at least one young person who does more, cares more and gives more. In the years to come these are the people who will be taking on significant roles within our community and we are delighted to be able to encourage them to be rise to challenge and reach their individual goals, through these awards."

As well as the award sponsors listed above, the Partnership would like to thank Palladian Press for printing the marketing material, e-teksys Solutions for managing the website and Softview Conservatories for sponsoring the event programme. Thanks also to the Colchester Scout Band, last year's Arts Award winners Katy Seath and Nicola Bull and the local Stage Coach group for the night's live entertainment.

Local Colchester business - Agency Underwriting Limited (AUL) - has been acquired by Towergate Partnership as an addition to its Underwriting Division but will carry on operating from Colchester in Towergate's prestigious new offices at the Octagon Centre under the continued management of Richard Lamberth and his team of 50 staff.

Long term advisers to AUL, Ellisons Solicitors, acted for the three shareholders of AUL Holdings Limited on the deal which was completed earlier this month for the entire issued share capital.

Other advisers involved included accountants, Whittle & Co and tax advisors, Lake Bushells, all Colchester based.

Ellisons Corporate Partner Sally Hudson led the Ellisons legal team which involved Property Partner Kevin Wilsher and Employment specialist Jayne Scott.
Sally commented on the deal as follows:
"This is exactly the type of deal that Ellisons is well suited to. We have enjoyed a long-term relationship with AUL and when it came to this important milestone in terms of the shareholders' business strategy, we were able to provide the full range of legal advice needed to meet their objectives. By working closely with Lake Bushells and Whittle & Co , we were able to field a truly local team of experts."

AUL controls £24m GWP, with a strong track record in underwriting buy-to-let, specialist property owners, and niche travel business. Towergate Underwriting, a part of Towergate Partnership, is one of the UK's leading providers of specialist insurance products

Head of Property Peter Powell welcomes Philip to the team: "The Firm has always enjoyed a strong footing in Property. It has an enviable client base and a solid reputation. However, the partners cannot be complacent and to ensure that we maintain our leading position and the confidence of our clients, we need to recruit and grow the Junior end of the team. 30.06.2006 - Ellisons Solicitors onside with Colchester United in taking tough stance on Parkinson contract

As World Cup fever grips the nation, one newly promoted club in the East of England fought a different battle, this time flying the flag of employment law.

As Colchester United Football Club's popular manager Phil Parkinson resigned and competitor league club Hull City poised to poach, the Directors and Management of the Club took the bold step of seeking a High Court injunction to ensure that all parties adhered to the correct protocol of terminating the manager's contract, which still had almost a year to run,

Advised by local Ellisons partner Graeme Wallington and Devereux Chambers, the club gained a temporary injunction on the 23rd June, clearly showing both Hull and their valued manager that they were serious and were prepared to fight for what was best for the club and its future.

Happily after almost a further week of negotiation a sum of in the region of £400,000compensation, plus the recovery of legal costs, has been agreed.

Ellisons partner Graeme Wallington explains the reason for the stance:
"Colchester United would have preferred Phil Parkinson to stay but appreciate that when you are"hot property", the offers are going to come in. But this stance was not about Phil Parkinson the person but Phil Parkinson the employee and the fundamental belief that even the football world has to take employment contracts seriously. We are delighted that the club has received significant compensation for the loss of their manager and that we have shown that employment and contract law applies as much to football as it does to any other business."

26.06.2006 - Corporate Lawyer, Seamus Clifford, comes home to Ellisons

Seamus Clifford, rejoins Ellisons Solicitors in Colchester, after spending six years in the Corporate department of London law firm Berwin Leighton Paisner.

Seamus, who trained and qualified with Ellisons, returns to the Firm to head up the Corporate Commercial team. He is the second partner in under a year to be recruited from a leading London law firm by this Essex based practice.

Seamus advises on a wide range of corporate matters including mergers and acquisitions, joint ventures, shareholder arrangements and corporate re-organisations. He has also played an active role in his previous firm's highly regarded multi-disciplinary Hotels and Leisure Group.

Guy Longhurst one of the Firm's Managing Partners is delighted to have his former colleague return:
"It has been one of the Firm's stated strategic objectives to attract more solicitors with London experience. Seamus particularly matches our criteria in that we know he will fit in culturally and his London perspective makes him an ideal team member as we now compete for London work and the opportunities offered by such initiatives as the Olympics and the Haven Gateway projects,"

Seamus is equally positive about his decision:
"I cannot deny that some of the motivation for moving is lifestyle. Who would not be excited about losing the daily commute to London? However, the primary motivation for my decision to return is the recognition that both Ellisons and the local business community have changed dramatically in the last six years. The opportunities for Ellisons and its clients have never been better and the Firm is at a very exciting stage of structural development with a strong younger partnership to act in succession to the formidable reputation of the current senior partners."

Seamus Clifford has lived in the Colchester area since he was a young boy. He is married to a local barrister and they have one daughter. A keen sportsman, he has played rugby for Mersea, Sudbury and Colchester teams and is a member of the West Mersea Yacht Club and Colchester Rugby Club.

Lexden Saints have won the Colchester and District Youth League (under 13s) for the third year running and were presented with their prize this evening after the final game of the season.

17.03.2006 - Two New Acquisitions for Car Dealer Underwoods

As his car dealership business approaches its 25th anniversary this April, local businessman Gerry Wiggins has just acquired two new car dealership garages for his portfolio making the current number of Underwoods branded sites seven, with eleven franchises in total selling Vauxhall, Peugeot, Ford, Mazda, Skoda and Renault cars

This latest expansion involves two site acquisitions from the East of England Co-operative Society. The first, a further outlet in Colchester, formerly the Sterling Garage in Wimpole Road, operates as a Peugeot dealership. This purchase was completed on the 6th January 2006. The second, completed on 10th February was a purchase of another Sterling Garage in Cornard Road, Sudbury which represents Gerry's first foray out of Essex and into Suffolk. All employees have been retained and the Wimpole Road dealership has undergone a significant refurbishment, in spite of the intention to eventually relocate this business to the 2½ acre site on Ipswich Road.

Advising Gerry Wiggins on both these deals was Kevin Wilsher, a partner at Ellisons Solicitors. Kevin has worked with Gerry from the beginning.

"Gerry is an inspirational example of a local businessman with a strong vision and the determination to see the dream through to reality. Ellisons is delighted to have worked with him and Underwoods for so many years and is particularly impressed with these latest acquisitions which will provide the company with the necessary momentum and spread to be recognised as a truly leading name in the motor trade."

Gerry is happy with the pace of expansion: "I want us above all to remain a family business, small enough to care but large enough to exist, invest and improve. We have grown the business around strong central support and it is important to me that we do not lose these core values of care and commitment just for the sake of size."

At all branches, Underwoods offer new and used vehicle and van sales, servicing, body shop repairs, parts and accessories, providing its customers a first class product and a high level of service.

Branches can be found in Colchester (two adjacent sites in Ipswich Road and one in Wimpole Road); Tiptree (Church Road); West Mersea (Kingsland Road); Clacton (Old Road) and Sudbury (Cornard Road). The group employs 250 staff, many of whom have been with the company since the very beginning

04.03.2006 - New Notary at Ellisons makes two out of three in Colchester

Ellisons solicitor Judith Winward has just been granted a Notarial Faculty by the Archbishop of Canterbury, making her a Notary Public. Judith joins an ancient profession, which is essentially a third branch of the law (solicitors, barristers, notaries) whose authority to practise is given by the Lord Archbishop of Canterbury, through the Court of Faculties (ecclesiastical court).

There are only three Notaries in Colchester and Ellisons Senior Partner Bryn Smart is not only one of the other two but with almost 20 years of practice he is also the longest qualified:
"I am thrilled that Judith has chosen and has succeeded to qualify as a Notary Public. There are only about 900 Notaries in the whole of England and Wales and Ellisons is very proud to share its office space with two of the three in Colchester. "

Bryn continues: "Notarial services continue to be in demand as more and more British have businesses, residences and family connections abroad. Many people are surprised to find because of the fundamental differences in legal systems between our own common law system and the civil law system which dominates the rest of Europe, that notaries abroad working on a transaction will not accept a Solicitor as a legal representative but will expect a Notary to be involved. So if you need to complete legal transactions such as overseas property purchases or just need to have your identity confirmed here to satisfy authorities abroad, then you will need to find a Notary"

Judith concurs: "The essential role of the English Notary is to verify the identity of the person appearing before him, ascertain that they have the authority to do what they say they want to do, and establish that they actually want to do what they are doing and are not being coerced in any way. Effectively, we assist a notary abroad to ensure that the transaction is not flawed, so we seek to ensure that whatever part of the transaction is carried out in England is done so in a form which will be accepted by the state in which the transaction is intended to take place."

It is a difficult route to become a Notary Public. With up to five years' study and no second chance if you fail, many start the course but few finish. But Judith has always been up to a challenge and managed to complete her qualification, by studying intensively, in just a year. Not surprising when you consider that her first career was in journalism with eight years at the Evening Gazette in Colchester before deciding to study law at Essex University. She joined Ellisons as a trainee in 2000 and now specialises primarily in resolving civil and commercial disputes.

Although both Bryn Smart and Judith Winward are solicitors at Ellisons, their respective Notarial practices are carried out totally independent of the Firm.

02.02.2006 - New Owners for leading local pharmacies

Scrutton Bland Accountants and Ellisons solicitors have advised pharmacist Nick Hunt, Director and Shareholder of NDH Enterprises Limited, on the acquisition of two established pharmacies - one in Sible Hedingham, Halstead and the other in Long Melford. Nick Hunt has been practising as a Pharmacist in East Anglia for over 25 years.

The deal which was closed today at Ellisons' Head Street Office saw Sheila Graham and her son Phillip, advised by Robin Burnett of Burnett Barker Solicitors, sell the two outlets developed by the late Gordon Graham to NDH Enterprises Limited.

Both businesses will continue to operate under the same trading name and all 22 employees have been retained by the new owners.

The Ellisons Solicitors team was led by Head of Corporate Commercial Max Harnden who was supported by Partner Bryn Smart on property issues and Associate Jayne Scott on employment matters. Scrutton Bland was represented by specialist Corporate Finance partners Andy Higginson and Andrew Strickland.

Andy Higginson states "Scrutton Bland is very pleased to have assisted the purchaser Nick Hunt in all the financial aspects of the transaction. We look forward to a continuing relationship with the business and helping Nick Hunt to make the most of an enterprising opportunity".

Ellisons partner Max Harnden comments:

"This is the type of deal that Ellisons are well suited to. We were able to provide our client Nick Hunt with the full range of legal advice needed to meet his objectives. And of course by working closely with our colleagues at Scrutton Bland, we were able to field a truly local team of experts for this entrepreneurial businessman and his new venture."

16.01.2006 - New Role at Ellisons as three are made Associates

Jayne Scott, Sally Hudson and Caroline Price have been promoted to the new position of "Associate" with Ellisons Solicitors in Colchester.

Announcing the promotions Senior Partner Bryn Smart explained: "The position of Associate is now becoming common in law firms as recognition for more senior solicitors and of their potential for progression to partnership. The new rank is intended to reflect the partners' appreciation of our most senior solicitors, to applaud their achievements to date and to recognise their potential for partnership. Unlike many other professional career structures, a solicitor has a significant number of years between qualification and attaining partnership. During this time they are busy gathering experience and expertise and developing a client base. The static title of "solicitor" does not accurately reflect this professional development. The title of Associate goes some way to denote these individuals' seniority and professional success and we look forward to making further such promotions in the years to come."

Each of the three specialises in key practice areas. Jayne Scott is pivotal to the Firm's Employment Law Department and has developed a strong reputation among both local and London based clients. She advises on all aspects of the fast moving area of employment law and also represents clients at Employment Tribunal. Sally Hudson advises on all aspects of corporate and commercial work including issues relating to sole traders, partnerships and companies, from setting up in business to providing on-going advice and support. She also advises on corporate transactions including acquisitions and disposals and management buy-outs. Caroline Price has over 16 years experience in Family Law. She deals with all aspects of matrimonial law including divorce and negotiations in respect of financial arrangements. Caroline also advises on cohabitee disputes, separation issues and matters concerning children including residence and contact

All three promotions came into effect on 1 January 2006

YOUNG HEROES TAKE CENTRE STAGE

Awards recognize achievements of young people.

Press Release for Colchester Youth Awards Partnership

Young people who have overcome remarkable odds, carried out fantastic work for their community or been a tower of strength to others are to be recognized at the first ever Colchester Youth Awards.

A total of 11 awards will be presented at a special ceremony at Colchester Town Hall on Friday, November 11.

More than 100 young people have been nominated for the awards. Most of the nominees have a remarkable story to tell, like the teenage girl who was unable to take her GCSEs following the death of her only parent in a tragic accident.

The youngster became the legal guardian of her younger sister at the same time as taking, and completing, vocational courses and obtaining employment in the caring industry. She has also successfully secured accommodation for herself and her sister.

By the age of 10 another nominee had lost both her younger sister and mother to serious illnesses. She also had the task of helping her father beat depression following the tragic events. Despite all the trauma in her life the youngster has gone on to achieve at school and has become a huge inspiration to others.

Colchester Town Mayor Terry Sutton, who is patron of the awards, said: "The majority of young people are still branded as uncommunicative, anti-social yobs. We need a place to shout about their triumphs, their successes and their input into our borough.

"This is why Colchester Youth Awards have been created and its goal is to celebrate the achievements of young people across the borough. We all know at least one young person who does more, cares more and gives more and these awards recognize young people for their fantastic accomplishments."

The eleven categories for the awards are as follows:

  • Volunteer
This award recognises the efforts of a young person who gives their time voluntarily for the benefit of others. This could be as part of a group (i.e. Scouts, Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme, Youth Club etc.) or individually.

  • Carer
This award will recognise a young person who has cared for someone else. This could be a family member or friend, maybe during an illness or injury, or possibly has helped someone else to get through a difficult time.

  • Enterprise
Individuals or groups of young people can be nominated for this award. We are looking for enterprising ideas, either in business or in the community that show innovation or have provided a service that filled a gap in or enhanced provision.

  • Educational Achievement
This award recognises effort that has led to better than expected educational achievement with a particular focus on young people who were under achieving or have to battle against difficult circumstances.

  • Arts

Arachne networking
22.09.2005 - Olé Arachne - "Summer" party has distinctly Spanish theme

Cool bubbly cava, enticing tapas and sultry sangria were savoured in the beautiful surroundings of the Minories Garden on one of the year's last "Summer" evenings, as over 50 members and guests networked and were entertained by the soulful sound of Spanish guitar music courtesy of talented Martin Plackett.

Arachne was delighted to have Kath Wood, Director of firstsite update them on progress of the new purpose-built visual art space for firstsite in Colchester's town centre, as well as talking generally about how business can support the arts in the area. Kath invited guests in from the garden to the gallery's specially appointed room displaying plans and progress of the new project

Arachne, the networking forum aimed at women in business in the region and formed by Ellisons Solicitors, is now over a year old and membership is growing all the time

Businesswomen in the Colchester area can apply to join Arachne by visiting the Ellisons website www.ellisonslegal.com and clicking on the Arachne button where there is an online membership form.

Colchester Divorce Lawyers Launch Alternative to Court
20.09.2005 - Colchester Divorce Lawyers Launch Alternative to Court

Eleven lawyers representing six local firms of solicitors officially launched the Colchester pod of Collaborative Family Lawyers last night with a presentation and drinks at the Minories Art Gallery.

To an audience of advisers including accountants and financial advisers, the presenters outlined the new collaborative approach which can now be offered as an alternative to the neutral stance of mediation or the more traditional adversarial court system.

All eleven lawyers have been specially trained to resolve divorce and relationship breakdowns in a collaborative manner.

The key elements of the collaborative approach which was first developed in North America during the 1990s are:

  • The lawyers and their clients sign an agreement not to go to court. If either client then decides to go to court, both clients must seek new lawyers.

  • All negotiations take place in front of the clients making the process more transparent and less bureaucratic in that written correspondence is actively discouraged.

  • The clients set both the pace and scope of the negotiations giving them a greater sense of control. Issues are resolved by the parties with assistance from the lawyers.

  • Other non-legal professionals are involved as required but as a party to the process rather than an individual.

The Colchester launch complements similar launches in Norwich (14th September); Ipswich (6th October) and Bury St Edmunds (18th October). There are almost 30 collaborative lawyers in these four regions with a further 35 in Cambridge where the process has already been launched. As a group, the lawyers are referring to themselves as CLEAR (Collaborative Lawyers East Anglia Region) and to reflect the spirit of collaboration will be marketing the service jointly via a website, soon to be set up www.clear.gb.com.

The current eleven qualified Colchester Collaborative Family Lawyers are:
  • Alison Cantor - Thompson Smith & Puxon

  • Chris Graves - Fisher Jones Greenwood LLP

  • Ian Richardson - Sparling Benham & Brough

  • Jane Wilson - Fisher Jones Greenwood LLP

  • Jon Armstrong - Ellisons Solicitors

  • Kate Taylor - Fisher Jones Greenwood LLP

  • Nicky Coates - Ellisons Solicitors

  • Nigel Humphreys - Fisher Jones Greenwood LLP

  • Patsy Phillips - Ellisons Solicitors

  • Simon Osborn - Jackson & Partners

  • Stephen Harris - Bates Wells & Braithwaite

In a society where one in two marriages end in divorce and the average length of a marriage is only eleven years, these Colchester lawyers are pleased to be able to offer their clients a means of separating with dignity and respect, preserving relationships wherever possible and dealing with the issues that really matter in a sensitive and honest manner.

Ellisons' Gloria sleeps rough for London's homeless in HOPE Worldwide's
25.08.2005 - Ellisons' Gloria sleeps rough for London's homeless in HOPE Worldwide's "The Big Night Out"

The 3rd September will be a "Big Night Out" and one to remember for Gloria Murray, a legal secretary for the past twenty years in the Personal Injury department at Ellisons Solicitors in Colchester. For that is the night that the Colchester mother of two will be sleeping in a cardboard box at the Oak Hill Park in East Barnet, raising both money and awareness for the plight of London's homeless.

Gloria and her fellow fundraisers are being organised by HOPE Worldwide which through its Two Step programme, launched in January 1993, assists over 200 homeless people per year into private, permanent accommodation.

"I was aware of HOPE Worldwide's work through my church and through my daughter who acts as a volunteer with the organisation in South Africa. This particular initiative caught my attention as an opportunity not only to raise money for a good cause but to increase my and others' understanding of what it is to be homeless. I was shocked to learn that as many as one in ten people in England will experience homelessness at some point in their lives and the reasons for them finding themselves in this plight are wide ranging. I was particularly impressed by HOPE's approach to solving the longer term problems of the homeless, addressing the reasons why people find themselves on the streets and working with them to enable them to get back on their own two feet with dignity"

If you would like to help Gloria raise money for London's homeless, you can email her your pledge at gloria.murray@ellisonslegal.com or send her your sponsorship money in the form of a cheque made out to "HOPE worldwide" to Ellisons Solicitors, Headgate Court, Head St, Colchester, CO11NP

Ellisons new branch
21.03.2005 - Ellisons takes on more office space and makes it a Family affair!

Ellisons founded in 1750, is one of the East Anglia's longest established firms of solicitors. But occupying the historic Headgate Court, the former King's Head inn and the site of the Royalist surrender on 27 August 1648 which brought to an end the Siege of Colchester, does have its limitations. Quite simply, this thriving law firm has run out of space.

The Firm's "shop front" building, formerly occupied by British Gas, was acquired in 2001 providing space for the newly expanded residential property team. However only 4 years later, the partners found themselves under further pressure to find more accommodation for the growing firm.

Happily just a matter of yards away there was a solution in the form of 39a Head Street, with 2250 square feet of office accommodation, which meets to perfection the needs of Head of Family Patsy Phillips, Partner Jon Armstrong and the team of 6 Family lawyers.

Celebrating with her team with a bucks fizz breakfast, on the first day in the new offices, Patsy explains why she is happy to have her own space:

"The Firm has a wide range of commercial and private individual clients. In Family we are dealing with the sensitive issues of marriage break-ups and disputes over children. Our clients are often in an emotional state and we believe it will be beneficial for them to meet with us in the quieter surroundings of our new annexed offices. We look forward to making the space work for our clients and us."

Because of the close proximity of the new office space to Headgate Court, contact details for the Family department will remain the same and clients will be initially greeted at the main Head Street reception

Arachne networking
17.03.2005 - Arachne: Nippy Networking event

Arachne, the networking forum aimed at women in business in the region and formed by Ellisons Solicitors in the Autumn of last year, held a "Nippy Networking" evening at Ellisons' offices in Head Street last night

Some 25 Arachne members enjoyed the Ellisons' alternative to speed dating as they changed "partners" on the ring of a bell, taking on the challenge of getting to know someone new and introducing themselves in less than three minutes. After an exhausting and very lively hour of talk, members relaxed and mingled without the bell over a glass of wine and a delicious buffet supper.

As Jayne Scott, employment expert at Ellisons and Joint Secretary of Arachne explains:
"The idea of having an "alternative to speed dating" was a result of a number of members' comments that they would appreciate more opportunity to meet and talk with guests that they don't know or at least don't know very well. It is certainly one of Arachne's networking aims to extend each member's number of contacts in the local business community and to have fun whilst making new friends. By literally forcing people into ever-changing three minute discussions, we can truly say that everyone got the chance to meet someone new."

Businesswomen in the Colchester area can apply to join Arachne by visiting Arachne on the Ellisons website www.ellisonslegal.com where there is an online membership form.

We're behind you!
15.12.2004 - "We're behind you!"
Ellisons Solicitors work with the Mercury to promote Christmas panto

Christmas shoppers in Colchester's Head Street may be surprised to see that the "Shop Front" of Ellisons Solicitors has a seasonal theme….but we are not talking tinsel.

Instead of posters promoting Personal Injury Claims advice and how to make Employment Law work for you, the local law firm has entered into the festive spirit and joined forces with the Mercury Theatre to promote their panto Aladdin.

Ellisons' partner Guy Longhurst explains:
"We have a superb location on a busy shopping street which is perfect for promotional purposes. However, we recognise that legal services are perhaps not the most eye catching content and that we could do more to create "curb appeal". We have been a Corporate Community sponsor of the Mercury Theatre for many years and were looking for ways of supporting the theatre practically as well as financially. Giving the Mercury our window for the Christmas period was a winning decision for all involved. We have a festive look to our shop front; the Mercury has a high street position for some promotional posters."

The Aladdin themed window display will stay up for the run of the pantomime and Ellisons intend it to be the first of many themed window displays.

09.12.2004 - Arachne Wine Tasting - as Ellisons Celebrate Business Woman of the Year

Arachne, the networking forum aimed at women in business in the region and formed by Ellisons Solicitors earlier this year, held a Christmas Wine Tasting on 9 December.

The event also celebrated the Business Woman of the Year Award, sponsored by Ellisons Solicitors and recently won by Marie Partner, Chief Executive of Colchester United Football Club.

Marie and four of the other five finalists joined the team from Ellisons Solicitors and thirty Arachne members to listen to Tim Ferguson of Promotion Wine talk about some of the wines he recommends to complement the seasonal fare.

Marie and the four finalists present - Linda Furnell of Body & Sole; Kath Wood of firstsite; Sheree Wymer of Softview Conservatories and Sharon Searle of Pulse Promotions - were also presented with a bottle of champagne by Patsy Phillips, partner and Head of the Family practice at Ellisons Solicitors. The fifth finalist, Yvette Mayhew of Nayland Care, was unable to attend.

Patsy, who had been one of the four judges for the Business Woman Award congratulated the finalists on the extremely high standard of this year's competition:
"We were delighted to see a strong entrepreneurial showing as well as representatives from established businesses, the arts and sport. The decision was difficult but I'm pleased to say unanimous and we congratulate Marie, only one of three female Chief Executives in Football in the country and a very positive role model for women in business in Colchester."

The other three judges of the competition were Yve Newbold, Irene Kettle and Keeley Hogben.

1.11.2004 - Ellisons Solicitors strengthens Litigation practice with two partner promotions.

Louise Bland and Edward Powell have been promoted to partner at Ellisons Solicitors in Colchester taking the number of partners at this established East Anglian Firm to fourteen.
Louise joined the Firm in 1997 as a trainee solicitor after completing her Law Degree and LPC in Nottingham. Edward joined in 1998 having trained at a firm in Cambridge. Both specialise in litigation, advising on a broad range of dispute resolution for both businesses and individuals.
Head of Litigation Graeme Wallington is delighted with the promotions: “Litigation is an ever expanding and increasingly complex area of law. There will always be the need to find effective and sensible resolutions to disputes whether through the courts or otherwise and so I am happy that we have effectively home grown talent in Louise and Edward to continue to meet our clients' needs in this area."
The promotions come at a time of expansion in other practice areas. Heather Wakefield, a local vicar’s wife, has joined the Commercial Property Department as a solicitor. Private client has been boosted by the recent arrival of solicitor Kay Hunt and probate specialist Sheena Byford.

14.10.2004 - Peter Edmondson is the star of Ellisons Solicitors Golf Day at Frinton

Peter Edmondson of Jaygate Homes was the player of the day at Ellisons Golf Day held at Frinton Golf Course on Friday 8 October 2004. Peter received his Waterford Crystal trophy from Ellisons partner Guy Longhurst and Head of Personal Injury Robert Jones.

Like many firms Ellisons enjoys entertaining clients on the golf course but this year the Ellisons team were also remembering Ron Tudor, the partner who managed the Frinton office for many years and who sadly died earlier this year.

Ellisons Solicitors Frinton Resident Partner Nicky Coates said:
“It seemed appropriate to hold the Golf Day once again at Frinton. We like to think that Ron would have approved.”
Guy Longhurst adds: “And it seems particularly fitting that Peter was the recipient of the Ron Tudor trophy as he knew Ron well and indeed Jaygate Homes have shared the same office building in Frinton as Ellisons for many years.”

Thirty golfers spent the afternoon playing Frinton’s 18 holes and later enjoyed a celebration dinner followed by the prize giving.

09.09.2004 - Ellisons launch Arachne and sponsor the Colchester District Business Awards 2004 -Business Woman of the Year

Ellisons Solicitors is delighted once again to be sponsoring the Colchester District Business Awards - Business Woman of the Year.

Ellisons' strong links with businesses both regionally and in London make sponsorship of the category a natural choice. The award recognises women who have exhibited outstanding business achievement in their field.

The sponsorship complements another initiative by the Essex solicitors to support women in business in the region. They have formed "Arachne" a networking forum that was launched on the evening of 9 September with a party at the Firm's offices in Colchester.

"Arachne" aims to foster a community, which believes in sharing ideas, encourages individuals' professional aspirations and actively supports each other's businesses. The Group will focus on issues and opportunities, of relevance and interest to women in business in the region. Holding educational and social events on a regular basis, the group intends to maintain an informal style. Membership is by invitation only so that the group grows through member referral rather than as a commercial and fee paying entity.

Patsy Philips, Head of the Family department at Ellisons will chair "Arachne" assisted by solicitors Sally Boutell and Jayne Scott. At the evening's launch Patsy explained why the Firm has launched Arachne and sponsored the Business Woman of the Year Award:

"Women most definitely have a strong presence in the Colchester business community but when it comes to business networking very few women seem to have the time or the inclination to participate in the current networking circuits. With Arachne we are aiming to identify events and issues, which are genuinely of interest to this sector of the business community.

We are supporting the Business Woman of the Year Award not only because we believe it complements what we are trying to achieve with Arachne but also because we believe it is important that the contribution women make to business is recognised. At Ellisons we have much greater equality of the sexes than many law firms and so feel that we are a suitable role model to put our brand to this award."

The closing date for entries is Friday 24th September 2004. For an application form please contact Marion O'Connor Event Organiser on 01268 469430

The Awards will be presented at a black tie, presentation dinner dance, Friday 26th November 2004 at Charter Hall, Colchester.
